Parell Stars Again, But IUP
Falls to Shippensburg
Ashley Watt scored two goals and Shippensburg broke open
a close game after halftime as the Raiders defeated IUP,
5-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest
Thursday afternoon.
Shippensburg, ranked third in the National Field Hockey
Coaches Association Division II poll, improved to 10-1
overall and 8-1 in the PSAC. IUP dropped to 5-8 and 4-6
in the PSAC.
The loss offset another stellar goaltending performance
by IUP sophomore Jamie Parell. The reigning PSAC player
of the week made 29 saves, keeping the Indians in the
game until Shippensburg opened up what was just a 1-0
lead at halftime.
Natalie Grazan scored the only goal of the first half
after a scoreless opening 25 minutes. Shippensburg made
it 2-0 when Carli Bordner scored with 33 minutes left in
the game, and Watt scored the next two goals to open up
the margin. Lindsey Knupp rounded out the Raider scoring.
Parell has now made 52 saves in the past two contests,
including 23 in a 2-1 overtime win over Lock Haven on
Monday. That victory was the first ever for IUP over Lock
Haven in a series that dates all the way back to the 1977
season.
IUP returns home on Saturday for a PSAC contest against
East Stroudsburg beginning at 1:00.
