IUP Defeats Denison in
Home Opener
IUP built a 4-0 lead in the first half and coasted to a 7-1 victory over
visiting Denison in the home opener for the Indians. IUP, playing its
third game in as many days, improved to 2-1 on the season while Denison
was playing its first game of the year.
Alysia Spence scored twice in the opening 35 minutes while Julie Bergin
and Jess Malenich also found the net as IUP took a 4-0 cushion with still
13:11 remaining in the first half.
Bergin gave IUP the lead when she tallied just 3:52 into the contest.
Spence followed less than three minutes later, and Malenich scored at the
20:53 mark to give the Indians a 3-0 lead before Spence rounded out the
first half scoring.
IUP continued the offensive onslaught after intermission, scoring three
more goals in a span of 9:53. Julie Hess scored her first goal of the
campaign with 25:48 left in the game, and Amy Pincock and Megan Clark
provided goals off the bench to give the Indians a 7-0 lead with 15:55
remaining.
Denison avoided the shutout with 6:02 left on the clock when Jennifer
Lacey scored a goal against IUP backup netminder Jamie Parell. Courtney
Cordeiro was credited with the assist.
Chrissy Hill and Kandice Pyles each had two assists on the day for IUP
while Hess and Trisha Benedetti also aided on goals. Monica Kling was
forced to make only one save while playing the first half in goal for
the Indians, and Parell made four saves in the second half. Sarah
Robator was busy minding the Denison goal, registering 16 saves.
IUP is not home again until hosting Bloomsburg on September 25. The
Indians will play in the Longwood Tournament next weekend, taking on
Kutztown and the host Lancers on Saturday and Catawba on Sunday.
