Paul Tortorella
Defensive Coordinator/Strong Safeties/Drop Linebackers

Paul Tortorella joined the IUP staff as defensive coordinator in 1995. 

Since coming to IUP, Tortorella has directed a defense that has  ranked among the best in the nation.  A year ago, the Crimson Hawks led the PSAC and was 14th nationally in scoring defense at 14.4 points per game while surrendering just 96.6 yards per game on the ground, the 26th best mark in the nation.

In 2003, IUP allowed 16.5 points per game, the 14th lowest figure in the country.  The previous season, the defense forced 42 turnovers, the second most in the nation, including 23 interceptions.

Six years ago, IUP placed 11th among all Division II schools in total defense and seventh in pass efficiency defense while recording the third stingiest defense against the score during the regular season.

Tortorella got his coaching start on the prep level in 1985, serving as linebackers coach at Mount Lebanon High School.  He then began a nine-year stint as an assistant coach at a pair of Division I universities, including six at Maryland and three at Akron.

Tortorella joined the Maryland staff as a graduate assistant working with linebackers and the secondary from 1986-87 followed by one year as a volunteer assistant secondary coach.  In 1989, he was hired on a fulltime basis as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach, and he added halfbacks to his list of responsibilities in 1990.

In 1992, Tortorella departed Maryland for Akron, where he coached defensive backs through the 1994 season before joining the IUP staff.

During his career, Tortorella has coached two players who went on to successful NFL careers.  Defensive back Victor Green (Akron) played with the New York Jets from 1993-2001, the New England Patriots in 2002 and the New Orleans Saints in 2003 while tight end Frank Wycheck (Maryland) retired after the 2003 season following an 11-year pro career which saw him catch 505 passes.

A pair of IUP cornerbacks have earned All-America recognition under Tortorella’s tutelage, including Barry Threats (1997 and 1998) and Joey Flora (2001).

Tortorella is a 1985 graduate of Slippery Rock with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education.  He and his wife Michele are the parents of Luke (11), Annalise (8), Zachary (5) and Michael (2).

Jim Smith
Passing Game Coordinator/Quarterbacks

A 1998 graduate of IUP and a three-year letterman on the  football team, Jim Smith is in his ninth season on the coaching staff.

After coaching the linebackers from 2002-05, Smith is now in charge of the quarterbacks while also coordinating the passing game.

Smith was a part-time coach in 2000 and 2001 while also teaching at Latrobe High School.  He mentored the IUP wide receivers in 2000 before coaching the running backs and serving as passing game coordinator the following year.  Smith was also a member of the coaching staff during the 1998 campaign.

Smith lettered from 1994-96 as a wide receiver at IUP. During that time, he played in 18 games and caught 20 passes for 229 yards.  After his playing days were over, Smith served as a student coach assisting with the wide receivers during spring practice in 1997.

Smith is a graduate of Dover High School in York, where he was an all-county selection in both football and wrestling his junior and senior years.  He holds the school record for most receptions in a season with 68 in 1991 and caught nine touchdown passes that year.  Smith was selected Dover’s Athlete of the Year as a senior.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from IUP in 1998.  Smith and his wife Lori are the parents of Trevor, born in March 2006.

Mike Campolo
Running Game Coordinator/Offensive Line

Mike Campolo is in his sixth season on the IUP staff and third coaching the offensive line.  Last year, he added the title of running game coordinator.  Campolo was in charge of the Indian running backs from 2002-04.

Campolo worked closely the past three seasons with Jason Capizzi, a consensus All-American in 2006 and a free agent signee by the Pittsburgh Steelers after the April NFL draft.

Campolo was a four-year letterman for IUP from 1992-95, playing in 47 of 48 games and rushing for 984 yards and 20 touchdowns, including four in the playoffs in 1993 as IUP advanced to the national championship game.  He ranks 12th in IUP history in rushing touchdowns. 

As a senior in 1995, Campolo was voted captain and selected Most Inspirational Player by his coaches and teammates.

Prior to returning to his alma mater, Campolo was the running backs coach at Duquesne the previous three seasons.  He served in the same capacity for one season each at Serra Catholic High School in 1997 and Bethany College the following year.

Campolo is a 1996 graduate of IUP with a bachelor’s degree in communications media.  His son Vito was born in April 2006.

D.K. McDonald
Defensive Backs

D.K. McDonald joined the IUP coaching staff in January 2006 upon the hiring of Lou Tepper as head coach.  McDonald coaches the defensive backs at IUP after serving in the same capacity under Tepper at Edinboro from 2003-05.  His focus will be on cornerbacks and free safeties.

During his time as a coach at Edinboro, McDonald played a key role in developing some of the finest defensive units in Division II football.  In 2005, the Fighting Scots were No. 1 in the nation in scoring, rushing and total defense and third in passing efficiency defense.

McDonald was a four-year starter at cornerback at Edinboro from 1997-2000.  He was a first team All-PSAC West selection as a junior when he finished with 29 tackles and a team-high 11 pass breakups. 

A native of Orrville, Ohio, McDonald had career totals of 108 tackles, four interceptions and 34 breakups.  His senior season in 2000 was the first as head coach at Edinboro for Tepper.

A 2001 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in history, McDonald was an Edinboro scholar-athlete all four years.  He served as the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was an Erie area representative for that organization after his graduation.

Nick Sirianni
Wide Receivers

Nick Sirianni joined the IUP coaching staff in July 2006 and is in charge of the wide receivers.

Sirianni spent the previous two years coaching cornerbacks at his alma mater, Mount Union College, and was part of the staff in 2005 when the Purple Raiders won the Division III  national championship for the eighth time in school history.

He was a three-year letterman and starter as a wide receiver at Mount Union from 2001-03 and an integral part of the 2001 and 2002 squads that claimed the national title.

Sirianni earned all-conference honors his senior year when he caught 52 passes for 998 yards for an average of 19.2 yards per catch.  He scored 13 touchdowns and averaged 71.3 receiving yards per game.  In 27 career games, he made 68 receptions for 1,332 yards and scored 17 touchdowns. 

A native of Jamestown, N.Y., Sirianni spent one season with the Canton Legends of the Atlantic Indoor Football League before returning to Mount Union in 2004.

Sirianni graduated from Mount Union in 2003 with a degree in physical education.

Bernie McQuown
Defensive Ends/Rush Linebackers

Bernie McQuown joined the IUP coaching staff in 1987 after establishing a reputation as one of the most successful and highly respected high school coaches in Pennsylvania.

McQuown retired in 1998 following 25 years as a guidance counselor at Indiana High School and 32 years overall at the school, including seven as a history instructor.

McQuown began his high school coaching career as an assistant at Punxsutawney before embarking on a 28-year run as a head coach on the prep level.  He spent three seasons at East Brady (1959-61) followed by four at Kane (1962-65), where he posted a record of 27-6-1.  But it was his 21-year stint as head coach at Indiana High School that earned him the most accolades.

McQuown was at the helm of the Indiana program from 1966-86, compiling 133 wins against just 56 losses and nine ties.  During his final five seasons with the Indians, his teams were 40-10-2. McQuown led two undefeated seasons (1976 and 1985), won three CENPAC championships and three Western Conference titles.  He coached the Big 33 team in 1979 and was named the Pennsylvania Class AAAA Coach of the Year in 1980.

McQuown graduated from Juniata in 1958 where he was an All-America offensive guard.  He and his wife Barbara have two daughters, Kathy and Kim, and five grandchildren.

Chuck Gironda
Defensive Tackles

Chuck Gironda returned to IUP during the summer of 2006 and will coach the interior of the defensive line.  Gironda was on the staff from 1986-2003.

After leaving IUP in 2003, Gironda was the head coach at Central Cambria High School for one year and the defensive coordinator for two seasons for the Johnstown Riverhawks of the Atlantic (now American) Indoor Football League.

A 1967 graduate of IUP and a three-year letterman on the football team from 1964-66, Gironda enjoyed an outstanding high school coaching career before returning to his alma mater in 1986.  He spent seven seasons at Northern Bedford (1972-78) and six at Central Cambria (1979-84).

Including a 6-5 record at Central Cambria in 2003, Gironda had a high school mark of 93-38-5.  His first four teams at Northern Bedford went 7-3, 9-0-1, 8-1 and 9-0 and captured three straight Mountain Conference championships.

His pattern of success continued at Central Cambria, where his 1983 and 1984 teams went 9-2 and 7-2-1, respectively, and claimed a share of the Big Nine Conference title in 1983.

Gironda was a social studies instructor at Central Cambria for 29 years during his high school and college coaching careers, retiring following the 2004-05 academic year.

Gironda and his wife Kathleen are the parents of four children.  His son Ray earned four letters at IUP as a defensive lineman from 1994-97.  The couple also has five grandchildren.

Bill Waryck
Tight Ends

Bill Waryck is in his ninth season on the IUP staff and his fifth working primarily with the tight ends.  He is in charge of the long snappers in addition to assisting with the offensive line.

In the four years from 1999-2002 he was an assistant on the defensive line and the scout team.

Waryck was the head coach at Indiana High School from 1992-98 after being an assistant at Indiana from 1984-87.  He ran the Marion Center High School program from 1988-91.

Waryck graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1983 with a degree in biology and is a biology teacher at Indiana High School.  He played freshman football at Penn in 1979 and was a member of the school's junior varsity and varsity squad in 1980.

Waryck and his wife Jan are the parents of daughter Alyssa (18) and son Brian (10).

Gene Bicego
Kickers/Punters

Gene Bicego is in his 22nd year on the IUP coaching staff and is in charge of the team's kickers. 

During his time at IUP, Bicego has worked with some of the finest kickers in school history.  Mike Geary and Jon Ruff share the PSAC single season field goal record with 18 in 1993 and 1995, respectively, and Josh Telenko ranks sixth in conference history in points scored by a kicker with 242.

IUP kickers had a streak of 96 consecutive extra points made from the middle of the 2002 season until it was snapped against West Chester early in the 2005 campaign.

Bicego coached track and field at Homer-Center High School from 1972-78 and retired from his elementary teaching position at the school after 35 years.  He is a 1970 graduate of Edinboro.
