Mindy Sawtelle Earns
All-America Honors at NCAA Cross Country Championships

IUP sophomore Mindy Sawtelle turned in an eighth
place finish at the NCAA Division II cross country championships on
Saturday to earn a spot on the All-America team for the second time in
as many years.
Sawtelle, competing as an individual, had a time
of 21:54.1 in the 6K race. For the second straight year she was the top
finisher from the East Region, having placed second last fall for the
top showing ever by a woman from this region. The top 30 runners earned
All-America status.
Sawtelle was two spots ahead of Edinboro’s Julie
Nemergut, who had defeated her at both the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference and NCAA East Region meets. Nemergut did lead the Fighting
Scots to a second place finish with 101 points, trailing only Adams
State for the team title.
On the men’s side, Edinboro finished in seventh
place while Lock Haven was ninth. Ryan Coon of Edinboro was the top
runner from the East Region, finishing in 17th place.
