IUP Baseball Team Reveals New Uniforms to Show Off Crimson Hawk Logo

The IUP baseball team is sporting new uniforms for the 2008 season.  As part of the IUP mascot changing to the Crimson Hawk and developing a new logo, the baseball team is now wearing three new uniforms and new baseball cap.

Three former IUP players unveil the new look.  Garry Wurm, Anthony Zambotti and John Fisanich each represent IUP baseball as former players and alumni.

"We are excited and proud to wear the new Crimson Hawk logo and our new uniforms,” said IUP head baseball coach Jeff Ditch.  “Our players enjoy the new uniforms.  It is another great step forward for our program and a direct result of the many donors, supporters and Dugout Club members making it possible.”

John Fisanich, IUP '93

Fisanich pitched at IUP in 1990, 1992-1993 and was a team captain in 1993.  He was named the PSAC pitcher of the week during the 1993 season and finished that year with five wins, including a complete game victory over Mansfield in the opening game of the PSAC tournament.  His team won the PSAC title in 1990.

He obtained a bachelor's degree in criminology from IUP and is currently employed as a trooper with the Pennsylvania State Police stationed in Indiana.  Fisanich was the head coach of a local senior legion team from 1994-1996, pitching coach at Waynesburg College from 2000-2002, and is currently the head coach at Indiana High School.

He and his wife Lisa have three children, a son Maddux (4), and daughters Taylor (2) and Paige (7 months).

“I have continued to follow the program and have been impressed with the job that Coach Ditch has done.  I believe he has the team headed back in the direction of again making IUP baseball a power in the PSAC,” said Fisanich.

Anthony Zambotti, IUP '03

Zambotti pitched for IUP from 2000-2003.  His name can be found on top of many IUP career pitching records, including the all-time leader in innings pitched (228), strikeouts (332) and starts (36).  He is second all-time in wins with 19.

He was drafted in the 14th round of the Major League Baseball 2003 draft and pitched for the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League..  A knee injury forced him to retire that same summer.  He also has coached at IUP since his playing days and is active in the IUP baseball golf events each year.

Zambotti is co-owner of Sky Satellite in Indiana, Pa.  Sky Satellite is the area’s preferred DirecTV dealer.

Garry Wurm, IUP '86

Wurm played baseball at IUP from 1982-86 and was team captain in 1986.  He is a member of the 2008 IUP Dugout Club and serves as honorary chair.  He is also active in the IUP baseball golf events each year.

Wurm was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1987 and pitched for the Bradenton Pirates and Augusta Pirates.  After being released, he was signed by the California Angels in 1990.  Playing honors included leading the Boise Hawks in appearances and ERA in 1989 and being awarded the Rolaids Relief Pitcher Award for the 1990 New York-Penn League as he was 2-0 with 19 saves that season as the top relief pitcher in the league.

His professional baseball career also include the position of associate scout with the Montreal Expos from 1996-98 and a member of the Association of Professional Baseball Players of America.

Wurm resides in Ebensburg, Pa., with his wife Jacquie and two children Isaac (9) and Jack (5).  He is currently a commercial/personal lines insurance agent for the Keystone Insurers Group/Ebensburg Regional Office.  He also coaches the boy's varsity basketball team at Blacklick Valley High School and is a member of the West Lebanon baseball team in the Indiana County Summer Baseball League.

“I am very enthusiastic about the IUP baseball program's upcoming season,” said Wurm.  “Coach Ditch and the Crimson Hawks will build off of last year’s 20-win season and the hard work and dedication will pay off.”
