IUP senior third baseman
Tyler Wise and freshman shortstop Paul Bingham have been selected as second
team All-PSAC West performers for the 2007 season by the league’s head
coaches.
Wise, a graduate of Bedford
High School, played only one season at IUP but left his mark on the school
record book. He played in 46 games with 45 starts and batted .400
(58-for-145) with 14 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 34 runs scored
and 30 RBIs.
He
ranked second in the PSAC in home runs, slugging percentage (.669) and
on-base percentage (.503) while placing third in the league in total bases
(97), fourth in doubles and walks (25) and seventh in batting average.
Wise finished the season
riding an 11-game hitting streak and hit safely in 21 of the final 23 games
of the year. He had 16 multiple hit games and went consecutive games
without a base hit only once the entire season.
In the IUP single season
record book, Wise ranks in tie for first in doubles, tied for second in
total bases, tied for third in home runs, fourth in hits and fifth in
slugging percentage. Including the 2005 season at Shippensburg, Wise had 20
doubles, 14 home runs and 64 RBI in two seasons playing in the PSAC.
Bingham, a graduate of
South Western High School in Hanover, had an outstanding debut season for
the Crimson Hawks, batting a team-leading .409 (56-for-137) with six
doubles, four triples, 38 runs scored and 13 RBIs in 45 games including 43
starts. He was sixth in the PSAC in batting, first in triples and third in
on-base percentage (.500).
Bingham
stole 16 bases and was not thrown out once to rank seventh in the conference
in thefts. He finished the year with 16 multiple hit games, including five
with three hits, and had a team-best 12-game hitting streak. He was named
the PSAC West Player of the Week on March 19 after batting .529 over the
first 12 games of the season.
Bingham joined Wise as the
first pair of IUP teammates to reach the .400 mark in the same season since
Steve Murray and Kevin Schneider did so in 1997. In addition to having the
11th best single season batting average in school history,
Bingham also ranks in a tie for second in runs scored, fourth in stolen
bases and fifth in hits.
IUP finished the 2007
season with a record of 20-28 and 10-10 in the PSAC West. The Crimson Hawks
doubled their win total from the previous year and were in the hunt for a
berth in the PSAC playoffs until the final weekend of the season.
