How to Block Spam
If you are repeatedly receiving spam messages that have some common
characteristic, you can block these by establishing filtering rules via
Imail.
- Go to http://imail.iup.edu/.
Enter your username and email password and click Login.
- Click on the Rules button.
- Enter a rule name (ie Spamfilter), then click Add.
- Click Edit next to the new rule name.

- Enter the appropriate criteria for the filter. For
example, if you wish to block email messages from the domain "thatdomain.com",
you will need to enter the criteria as it appears in the illustration
below.

For Data, select "From" to indicate the From address. For Operation, select "Is" to indicate that the data must
match the parameter. For Parameter, enter *@*thatdomain.com
Note that the asterisk is a wildcard, and that using two
asterisks around the @ symbol will block messages from both @thatdomain.com
addresses and @sub.thatdomain.com addresses. For the Action, Discard is the recommended option. The
message will be deleted, never appearing in your Inbox.
- Click Update to save the filter.
For complete help on the Imail Rules feature, see
http://imail.iup.edu/Rules.html.
If you can't determine the From address by viewing the message,
you'll need to view the headers of the message and look for the
email address in the line that begins with 'From:'.
In Outlook Express:
- Right-click the message.
- Choose Properties.
- Click the Details tab.
In Imail:
- View the message.
- Click on the Headers button to view the message headers.
