In
early 1998,
stimulated by the very visible alcohol-related
deaths that had occurred on other college
campuses, as well as the university’s direct
experiences with alcohol-related deaths, Indiana
University of Pennsylvania (IUP) coordinated
community-wide discussions to address the alcohol
culture.
Through
a framework
that conceptualized the college alcohol problems as
multifaceted, IUP initiated a four-pronged approach
to culture change.
Four
community coalitions
were formed and meet regularly to address issues of
enforcement, prevention and treatment, university
and student affairs, and the community environment.
Since
the start of this work
in March 1998, over 80 students, faculty,
staff, and community members have worked diligently
to change the culture of tolerance and to dispel a
“party school” image at IUP.
