The Hispanic Journal is published twice annually by the Department of Spanish and the Graduate School of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Its purpose is to publish research and criticism of the highest quality in the areas of Spanish, Catalan, Galician, Basque and Portuguese literatures and film, and Spanish and Portuguese linguistics. We also publish interviews and book reviews concerning subjects that fall among the disciplines covered by the journal. Please see the list of books suggested for review on our website.
Every work submitted to the journal undergoes a rigorous evaluation process. The process commences with a recommendation from a member of our Editorial Board. The work is then evaluated by a member of the Advisory Board who has expertise in the area addressed by the submission. Finally, the editor reads the work to make the final recommendation. About 35% of the works received are published. The study may be written in Spanish or English. The editors of the Hispanic Journal invite submissions of unpublished studies only.
Submission of Articles
A current subscription to the journal is required of all authors at the time of submission. All articles should be prepared in compliance with the accepted style requirements established in the most recent versions of the MLA Style Manual and the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. Manuscripts should be double-spaced and should consist of at least 3,500 but not more than 5,500 words of text; this count includes endnotes, which should not exceed 40 lines altogether, as well as the Works Cited. An original manuscript and one copy of it should be submitted. The original should contain no obvious reference to the author, but the copy must feature the author’s name, postal and email addresses, and telephone and fax numbers on the title page. We also expect a two-paragraph cover letter introducing oneself and one’s work and enumerating the word count of one’s submission. Also, please complete the top portion of the Article Submission form, which can be downloaded from our website. Unpublished originals will be returned to the author only if s/he provides us with a self-addressed, stamped envelope at the time of submission.

A current subscription to the journal is required of all authors of book reviews at the time of submission. Reviews may be submitted on books that were published no more than three years ago, and for which no more than two other reviews have already appeared in other journals. Book reviews may be written in Spanish or English. A review of a single book may be between 550 and 1,000 words in length, while a review of two or three books on related topics may be as long as 1,750 words. These maximum word counts include a brief bibliography, if the author chooses to include one. Reviews should provide both a detailed summary and a critical evaluation of each book’s contents. The original should contain no reference to the author, but the title page of the copy must contain the author’s name, postal and email addresses, and telephone and fax numbers We also expect a two-paragraph cover letter, introducing oneself and one’s review and indicating the word count of the review. Resubmissions after acceptance
Articles, reviews, and interviews accepted for publication need to be re-submitted both in hard copy and in electronic format on a 3.5 inch PC-formatted diskette or on a CD. The articles must be written in WordPerfect (6.1 or more recent version) or in Microsoft Word (for Windows 98 or above). For administrative reasons, we will not accept articles sent via e-mail; they must be sent on a diskette or CD via regular postal mail. Diskettes and CDs cannot be returned.
