MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY SENATE The October 1, 1996 meeting of the University Senate was called to order by Chairperson Alarcon at 3:15 p.m. in Beard Auditorium. The following Senators were excused from the meeting: Affaneh, Barton, Bellak, Bozylinsky, Butzow, Conrad, Grove, Hanrahan, Heyer, Kolb, Krishnan, Maggiore, R. Mutchnick, Nardi, Numan, Nunn, Peterson, Pettit, Roberts, Staszkiewicz, Steigmann, Torrance. The following Senators were absent from the meeting: Aguirrezabal, Antelo, Bauer, Beisel, Bernot, Bowermaster, Camp, Carranza, Castro, Colvin, Craig, Crocker, Curey, Distanislao, Fisher, Garg, Gerhardt, Gibson, Green, Horst, Knepshield, Leonard, Lunger, McClay, Miller, Millward, O'Halon, Pearce, Receski, Riesenman, Shea, Shiring, Smith, Snyir, Sommer, Trautwine, Treaster, Trump, Twal, Wade, Welsh, Wieland, Wiggins, N. The minutes of the September 10, 1996 senate meeting, as presented with three corrections, were ACCEPTED with one additional correction: the spelling of Dr. Susan Wheatley's name was corrected. (The copy of minutes submitted for the University Archive reflects all four corrections.) Agenda items were APPROVED. REPORTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRESIDENT'S REPORT (Dr. Pettit) President Pettit was excused from the meeting. PROVOST'S REPORT ( Dr. Staszkiewicz) Provost Staszkiewicz was excused from the meeting. VICE CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT No report. CHAIRPERSON'S REPORT (Dr. Alarcon) Chairperson Alarcon made the following announcements: 1. Larry Kroah was elected by the Library and Educational Service Committee as the Senate Representative to the ESF Funds committee. 2. I have appointed Carolyn Thompson as the Senate Representative to the President's Athletic Advisory Committee. 3. I have appointed Annie Laurie Wheat as one of the two Senate Representatives to the planning Committee for the year 2000 graduation. One more is needed and anybody interested should contact me as soon as possible. OLD BUSINESS (carryover from September 10, 1996 meeting) There was no old business. Election of Vice Chairperson Senator Stineman conducted an election for the position of Senate Vice Chairperson. Mr. Scott Trump was unanimously elected for the position for the 1996-97 term. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS RULES COMMITTEE - CHAIRPERSON STINEMAN Chairperson Stineman announced the availability of the Senate roster on the Senate Web Page (http://www.iup.edu/senate). Library and Ed. Serv. Committee - Chairperson Jackson No report. Non-Credit Committee - Chairperson Nardi A report was made on behalf of Chairperson Nardi that informed the Senate that Senator Nardi was elected as the Chairperson of the Non- Credit Committee. The Senate was also informed about the upcoming meeting of the Committee to be held on October 22 at 3:15pm. Research Committee - Chairperson Neusius No report. Student Affairs Committee - Chairperson Trump No report. Univ. Dev. & Finance Committee - Chairperson Heckroth No report. Academic Committee - Chairperson Duntley No report. Awards Committee - Chairperson Wheat Chairperson Wheat announced that she was elected as the Chairperson of the Committee and David Bernot was elected as the Vice Chairperson. She asked everyone to think about nominations for this year's faculty awards. Curriculum Committee - Chairperson Kuzneski The following course WAS PROVISIONALLY APPROVED by the Senate, with the stipulation that the appropriateness of the course number will be determined later (Motion: Senators Buterbaugh/Orife). New Course Proposal - Department of Health and Physical Education HP 485 Student Assistance Program Training 3c-0l-3sh Prerequisites: Junior Standing and EP 202 Introduces the student to the concept of Student Assistance Programs in schools. Includes the history of SAP, current involvement in public education, and the educator's role as a SAP member. Provides an experiential basis for preparation to assume the role of a SAP member. Note: Majors in the B.S. in Education-Health and Physical Education program will have first opportunity to enroll in class; any openings in the class will then be offered to Elementary & Secondary Education majors.
