Frequently Asked Questions
What must I do to return to IUP?
In general, any undergraduate student who has withdrawn from the university
or was not enrolled during the previous regular semester must apply to IUP
for readmission.
How do I apply for readmission to IUP?
Graduate students wishing to return to the university must contact the
Graduate School at 724-357-2222 for specific instructions.
Undergraduate students will need to complete an Application for Readmission
and submit it to the Office of the Registrar. The application can be
obtained by one of the following options:
• Stopping by the Office of the Registrar, Clark Hall Lobby
• By calling 724-357-2377. During evening or weekend hours, you may call
this same number and leave your name and address and a form will be mailed
to you
• Download the form from the Registrar's Office website under ‘Forms
Available for Download’ (http://old.www.iup.edu/registrar/FORMS/INDEX.shtm)
• By logging on to URSA (http://old.www.iup.edu/ursa) and selecting the Apply
for Readmission to IUP option under the Student Services and Financial Aid
section
What are the deadlines for reapplying?
The readmission deadline for the Spring semester is December 1, and for the
Fall semester is July 20. For Summer, readmissions are processed on an
ongoing basis to allow students to return for any Summer Session. Please
consult the Office of the Registrar with specific questions. Call
724-357-2217.
What if I was academically dismissed?
If you were academically dismissed, your records will be reviewed by the
college that houses the major you wish to pursue. You can apply for a major
other than the one you were in when dismissed.
If I have a weak academic record, are there any special provisions to help?
There are several options that may apply depending on your academic record.
1. D/F Course Repeat Policy
http://old.www.iup.edu/registrar/policies/DFREPEAT.shtm
2. Canceled Semester Policy – for students separated from the university for
four (4) consecutive semesters and the intervening summer sessions.
http://old.www.iup.edu/registrar/catalog/acapolicy/index.shtm#Cancelled%20Semester%20
3. Fresh Start Policy – for students out five (5) years or more.
http://old.www.iup.edu/registrar/catalog/acapolicy/index.shtm#Fresh%20Start%20Policy
What if I have been away from IUP for a long time?
Students who have been away from IUP for more than 7 years should consult
with the College Associate/Assistant Dean’s Office that houses the major
they wish to pursue for a review of program requirements that must be met.
How will I know if my application has been accepted?
Once your application for readmission has been approved, you will be sent a
letter by the Registrar's Office with instructions on how to register. The
packet sent to you will include a flyer with registration instructions and
information, a readmit housing application, and a general information
letter.
After receiving this letter from the Registrar’s Office, please contact your
department office for your alternative pin number. If you cannot reach your
advisor or the department office, please contact your Associate/Assistant
Dean’s Office for further assistance.
If you were on probation or academically dismissed, your College will
contact you concerning your Academic Recovery Plan. For information on the
Academic Recovery Plan see http://old.www.iup.edu/success/ and click on Academic
Recovery on the left menu.
How can I obtain my PIN and/or password for registration? I
forgot it.
You have two options to have your PIN and password reset.
• You can bring a photo ID to Clark Hall.
• Or visit URSA at www.iup.edu/ursa. Enter your User
ID and click on “Forgot PIN?” on URSA. You can then answer the question that you created to gain access to the
system. This will allow you to create a new PIN.
How do I obtain my Alternate PIN for registration?
Please contact your advisor or academic department for advisement and/or
your Alternate PIN. As some departments follow reduced hours in the summer,
please contact your Associate/Assistant Dean’s Office if you cannot reach
the department.
When can I register for classes?
Once you receive your readmit notice, you will be eligible to register. Your
notice will provide instructions and dates when you can register.
Will I be able to register for the courses I need?
IUP is making great efforts to provide an adequate number of seats. While we
cannot guarantee a seat, scheduling early will greatly improve your
prospects. Be sure to consider acceptable course alternatives and alternate
times and days. Many areas also have online courses. If you are having
problems, please consult with your Associate/Assistant Dean.
What if I am unsure about what major to pursue?
Please consult with your faculty advisor or the appropriate college
office.
If you are uncertain, the Advising and Testing Center can help you with
major and career exploration. See
http://old.www.iup.edu/advisingtesting/explore.html.
Is there another web site that may be helpful in providing academic support
for students?
Yes. Please take a look at
http://old.www.iup.edu/advisoradvocate/acad-support/.
Financial Aid
How do I apply for financial
aid or is it too late?
You can still file the 2005-2006 Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA). Although you have missed the priority deadline, you may still
be eligible for Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work-Study, Federal Stafford
Loan, or Federal PLUS Loan. There are also a number of privately financed
Alternative Loans that are available. Check the financial aid website for
more details at
www.iup.edu/financialaid.
If I apply for financial aid when will I know what my eligibility is?
Financial aid awards for 2005-2006 will be posted on URSA in mid-June. You
can check the website using your student id and pin number. Regularly check
this site for important messages and requirements needed for financial aid.
I did apply for financial aid but received a Financial Aid Suspension
Letter stating that I was not eligible for federal student aid for
2005-2006. What can I do?
There is an appeal process that you can follow to try to regain
eligibility. An appeal form and the instruction for filing are on the
Financial Aid Office website
http://old.www.iup.edu/financialaid/forms.shtm.
I owe a prior balance on my IUP bill. How can I get this resolved?
There are a number of privately-financed Alternative Loan programs that
permit you to borrow money to pay for past due balances. Contact one of
these to inquire about your eligibility for such a loan.
National Education: 1-800-353-3357
TERI: 1-800-255-TERI
Nellie Mae EXCEL: 1-800-338-5626
Be sure to identify the fact that you are seeking funds for a past due
balance.
