D/F Repeat Policy

The D/F Repeat Policy gives undergraduate students the opportunity to repeat courses in which they received "D" or "F" grades in order to improve their grade point averages. The course being repeated must be the exact course in which the student received the "D" or "F" grade. If a higher grade is earned in the repeat attempt, the new grade replaces the prior grade in GPA calculations. However, all attempts and the original grade(s) will continue to appear on the student's academic transcript. Students have six attempts at course repeats during their undergraduate careers; course repeats beyond six are subject to averaging as new credits. A course taken at another university will not be applicable to IUP's D/F Repeat Policy; and if credits are transferred, will block repeat of the course at IUP.

To repeat a course in which a grade of "D" (undergraduates only) or "F" was received, a student must file a D/F repeat form prior to repeating the course. D/F repeat forms, available in departmental offices, must be filed by the specified deadline for validation in the Scheduling Center in Clark Hall. The appropriate repeat calculations will be performed only after the student has filed the completed form.

Graduate grading policy does not permit "D" grades. Graduate students may repeat "C" or "F" grades according to the following policy: (1) Only one course can be repeated for each graduate degree program the student attempts or completes; (2) This one course can be repeated up to two times, for a total of three attempts (the original registration for the course plus two repeat attempts). Semester hours for repeated courses will be counted only once for all attempts made, and the hours and grade earned when the course was last taken will be used to compute the grade point average. However, all attempts and the original grade(s) will continue to appear on the student's academic transcript.
