  1. Candidates must demonstrate a conversational proficiency in a foreign language. This requirement may be met by: (a) successful completion of 9 intermediate-level semester hours in a specific language, or (b) successful completion of an exemption or credit examination in lieu of the above. A foreign student, registered as such at IUP, whose acquired native language is other than English and who demonstrates an acceptable proficiency in English, can meet the foreign language requirement by successful completion of an exemption examination in the acquired native language.
  2. Candidates must document one semester of foreign residence (minimum of three months). Normally, the foreign residency requirement will be met in conjunction with a work experience, internship, or student exchange. A substitute cross-cultural experience may be permitted with the recommendation of the academic advisor. The foreign language requirement is a prerequisite to the foreign residency requirement.
