Frequently Asked Questions

Who works in the Writing Center?

The Writing Center is currently staffed by Dr. Lynn Shelly and Leah Chambers. Dr. Shelly has many years of experience in teaching writing and in working with writers one-on-one.  Leah Chambers is a PhD candidate in IUP’s Composition program.

Do I need to make an appointment?

No appointment is necessary. The Writing Center staff invites you to stop by during Center hours. If you would like to make an appointment, simply sign-up on the clipboard located on the wall outside of the center. Appointments can be made up to two weeks in advance. Around mid-term and just prior to finals week, the Writing Center may be busy.  During these times, we suggest you make an appointment to be sure that you get the time you want.

What should I bring with me to the Writing Center?

If you’re working on an assignment for a course, it’s always a good idea to bring a copy of the assignment sheet and/or course syllabus. You’ll get more specific feedback if your tutor clearly understands what it is that you are working on. It’s also a great help if you bring any notes, brainstorming, outlining or drafting relevant to the assignment.

Is my visit to the Writing Center confidential?

Yes.  Writing Center sessions are entirely confidential and conversations about your writing remain between you and the tutor. At your request, however, your tutor will fill out a “Faculty Report Form.” This form is designed to notify your professor that you worked with a tutor and to briefly summarize the session.

If you have additional questions about the Writing Center, do not hesitate to e-mail Dr. Shelly (Lynn.Shelly@iup.edu) or Leah Chambers (DLNN@iup.edu).
