May Commencement
It was a day of congratulations and achievement, as a total of 1,425 students received degrees at the May 11 commencement ceremony. Degrees approved included eight associates degrees; 1,167 bachelor’s degrees; 217 master’s degrees; 27 doctoral degrees and six specialist certificates.

Graduate Luke Matthews, a member of the Robert E. Cook Honors College, received the Syed R. Ali-Zaidi Award for Academic Excellence at the ceremony. Matthews, of Bryn Mawr, is the first from IUP selected for this annual award, designed to recognize a student from one of the 14 Pennsylvania State System universities. Matthews, nominated for the award by IUP President Dr. Lawrence K. Pettit, received $1,000 and a medallion in recognition of his outstanding academic performance and involvement in extra-curricular activities.

A total of 27 of the graduates were recognized for earning perfect 4.0 grade point averages during their undergraduate careers at IUP, and a total of 59 members of the third graduating class of the Robert E. Cook Honors College at IUP received degrees.

The recipients of the 2002 distinguished faculty awards also were recognized during the ceremony:  Dr. Laurence Kruckman, anthropology, for teaching; Dr. John Zhang, mathematics, for research; Ed Simpson, theater and dance department, for creative arts; and Dr. Veronica Toombs Watson, English, for service. Faculty winners received the commendations during the University’s annual honors day celebration in March.
