The reunion was organized by Byron Beard, with support in planning,
organizing, and execution by the staff of the IUP
Office of Alumni Relations, who
went well beyond expectations in making this event a success.
The weekend started and ended with a golf
outing at Toms Run at Chestnut Ridge, Blairsville, organized by Ron
Martini. The Office of Alumni Relations sponsored a welcome reception with
hors doeuvres and refreshments Friday evening in the Breezedale Alumni
Center. In addition to the brothers, Bob Davies, vice president for
University Relations and executive director of the IUP Foundation; Mary
Jo Lyttle 86, M89, director of Alumni Relations; Mary Morgan,
assistant director of Alumni Relations; and several student ambassadors
were present.
Saturdays schedule included a pig roast at the Holiday Inn, a visit to
the STG house, and an IUP campus guided tour, followed by a cocktail
reception and dinner at the Coney and a chapter meeting, with former
president Terry Wansor presiding. A chapter room at the Holiday Inn was
open throughout the weekend, with refreshments and displays of art work
(a.k.a. pledge paddles), old photos, and other memorabilia. Brothers met
one-on-one and in small groups to catch up on families and careers and to
swap stories and pranks from the good ole days. Several of the brothers
are still working, but many are retired. The variety of distinguished
accomplishments and professional careers in academia, military service,
sports, and private industry was very impressive. I found myself asking,
Is this really the same group of brothers I knew forty-two years ago?
The next reunion will be in 2009, chaired by Jim McCracken and Gene
Meglio. They and any other brothers who want to participate will meet next
year to plan the reunion, at a time and place to be determined. If you
graduated between 1962 and 1966 and would like to receive the announcement
or be added to the mailing list, please provide your contact information
to Bob Cavaluchi, 15016 Timberlake Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20905 or
e-mail cavaluch@yahoo.com.
All present were duly impressed with the students and staff they met, with
the growth of the university facilities and student body (now at 14,248),
current projects under construction, plans for future growth, and
maintenance of existing facilities, many of which were campus mainstays in
the early sixties. If you have not contributed to the
Foundation for IUP to support this growth and upkeep, you are
encouraged to do so. The current stewards of our alma mater are doing a
superb job maintaining our legacy and building legacies for the future.
They need our support. Your donation is important. This is the university
that put us on the path to success.
