Beth
Grossi D’92, a criminal justice professor at the University of
Louisville, was recently promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Army
Reserves. Currently on sabbatical while on active duty, she is serving as
inspector general with Eastern Region, based at Fort Knox.
The Canton, Ohio,
native has been in the army for twenty-two years, serving in active-duty
and Reserve capacities. She enlisted as a military police officer. Her
first assignment was at Fort Leonard Wood, where part of her mission
entailed donning civilian clothes to help crack down on area drug dealers.
She went on to work crime scene investigations and interrogation.
After serving almost a
four-year enlistment, she left active duty in 1986 as a sergeant to pursue
her master’s degree at the University of Louisville, settling there
because it was close to Fort Knox, her last duty station, and she was
familiar with it.
But before she left,
she applied to become an Army officer. In 1987, as she was preparing to
return to school, she received her commission.
She went on to command
the 378th MP Detachment (CID) in Louisville for almost four years. After
leaving command, she worked as the 100th Division’s physical
security officer and, eventually, inspector general.
Grossi had been the
inspector general for three years when she got called last year to fill in
as the Eastern Region’s IG at Fort Knox.
Teaching full-time at
Louisville, her stint was supposed to be for two weeks during the annual
Leader’s Training Course. As it took place during the summer, the call-up
did not interfere with her teaching duties.
But even before Grossi
arrived, she was asked to extend her stay to thirty days. Then six months.
Then a year, eventually staying through January.
Grossi said she missed
being in the classroom. But she embraced the opportunity to serve on
active duty again.
“This is a contribution
I want and need to make,” she said. “The university will always be there.”
