James Candelmo ’84
(right, with CIA Inspector General John Helgerson), deputy criminal chief in the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the
Eastern District of North Carolina, received the Central Intelligence
Agency’s Agency Seal Medal for his work as lead prosecutor in United
States v. Passaro. This was the first and only prosecution for
detainee abuse committed by a CIA contractor in Afghanistan. In addition,
he received the U.S. Department of Justice’s Award for Terrorism
Prevention and National Security Protection, in recognition of national
programs he helped to develop.
