After
a long and distinguished military career, retired U.S. Army Colonel
Stephen Abel ’73 was appointed by New Jersey’s governor on November
15, 2004, to be the Deputy Commissioner for Veterans Affairs after he was
confirmed by the State Senate on that same day. This subcabinet position
with the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs includes oversight of
the state’s three veterans nursing homes, a transitional housing unit for
homeless veterans, a network of county veterans service officers, the
state’s veterans monuments and memorials, and the largest and most active
state veterans cemetery in the United States. Steve looks forward to
serving the veterans of New Jersey in the months and years ahead. He lives
in Washington Crossing, Pa.
