Programs of Study
The Professional Studies in Education
Department offers the following programs:
Bachelor's Degree Programs
The department offers
two undergraduate degrees:
Elementary
Education
The Elementary Education program
is designed to provide learning experiences that will assist students in
developing into highly competent and effective teachers grades K-6.
Students are able to expand their knowledge through course work and field
experiences which embody content, knowledge of liberal studies, pedagogy,
curriculum, human development and learning, and a historical and
philosophical basis to under gird one's professional behavior. A 3.0
cumulative QPA is required to apply for teacher certification, to take
major courses in the department, and to
student teach.
Early Childhood
Education
The ECED/PreK-Grade 6 major is an innovative program of study that
prepares students to be highly competent primary/elementary teachers with
strong skills in the teaching of reading. The program will qualify
students for certification by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in
both Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education and the 120 credit
hour program includes an Academic Concentration in Reading. This
program of study requires all field experiences (Professional Sequence I
and II and Student Teaching) be conducted in Derry Area School District
and/or Greater Latrobe School District. Students will be responsible
for their own transportation to these school districts during Professional
Sequence II and Student Teaching. If a student is planning to
participate in the Student Teaching Abroad Program, Urban Studies Program
or any program that would require field experiences in other sites, the
ECED/PreK-Grade 6 program will be unable to accommodate those
requirements.
Admission to the
program is competitive. Each fall one new cohort of freshmen
students is selected through an interview process. Students
interested in the program should enroll in the unibersity as Elementary
Education majors and change their major once accepted into the ECED/PreK-Grade
6 major.
Interested students
should contact the Professional Studies in Education Department
(724-357-2400) and ask to make an appointment with the ECED/PreK-Grade 6
program coordinator to discuss admission to the program.
