Professional Sequences

Professional Sequence I
Students are placed in groups or cohorts of approximately 16 and then enroll in a set of courses known as Professional Sequence I.  These 5 courses (13 credits are the first "methods courses."  Four of the courses are held in the traditional manner in the university classroom, while one course, Pre-Student Teaching, is a field experience.  This allows the student to begin to put theory into practice through actual work in elementary and early childhood classrooms.  Follow this link for more information.

Professional Sequence II (Junior Block)
The Professional Sequence II experience (formerly referred to as Junior Block) prepares students for the full semester of student teaching that awaits them. Cooperating teachers and university supervisors play vital roles in ensuring students' immersion into public school teaching so that they have a positive experiential base upon which to build.  Follow this link for more information.

PRAXIS

All education majors are required to pass the Praxis I series of tests prior to admission to Professional Sequence I.  The Praxis II series of tests must be passed in order to be eligible for student teaching.  Please click Information about PRAXIS exams for additional information about PRAXIS.   Dr. Kelli J. CCAC/IUP Collaborative Elementary Education Program

The CCAC/IUP Collaborative Elementary Education Program is a unique, highly competitive daytime program that leads to the CCAC (Community College of Allegheny County) Associate Degree in Teacher Education and the IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. The program is designed for students committed to teaching in urban public schools. Helping students meet future challenges in teacher education, the program emphasizes the diverse issues that influence education in kindergarten though sixth grade. There are specific requirements for application, admission and retention in the program.

International Study

Study Abroad
IUP is one of only four American universities to be a member institution of ETEN, the European Teacher Education Network.  Through our membership in ETEN, we are able to offer a wide variety of international study experiences for IUP students and faculty members.

International Student Teaching (IST)
Students from Indiana University of Pennsylvania who are enrolled as teacher education majors in all certification areas are eligible to participate in this half-semester student teaching program. Students are assigned to a teaching site in the United States for the first half of the semester. The second half of the student teaching experience is completed in an overseas site. The program is designed to provide students with teaching experiences in one of six European countries. Teaching assignments are made for all certification areas.
