IUP - Punxsutawney
Campus and Academy of Culinary Arts IUP’s
Punxsutawney Campus enrolls some 300 full and part-time undergraduate students
and 110 Culinary Arts certificate students.
The campus dean, located in the central office at 1010 Winslow Street, is
responsible for security on the Punxsutawney Campus and the Academy of Culinary
Arts of IUP (Policy Disclosure 9).
The
university contracts for security with a private security agency, which supplies
full-time security officers for the campus located on 1010 Winslow Street during
the hours in which the full-time campus staff are not on duty.
The officers have completed the training course as prescribed in Act 235.
Security officers also work directly with local and state agencies on a
request-for-assistance basis. (Policy Disclosure 3) Security
guards report all safety, security, and university behavioral violations to the
IUP administration. Campus security guards do not carry firearms or have arrest
authority. If arrests are
necessary, the Borough Police are contacted.
Should the infrequent situation arise in which security determines that
armed police are needed, the Borough and/or State Police are called in for
assistance. Security
Officers are on duty on the Campus from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. seven days a
week beginning the week prior to the start of the Fall semester through the
close of the Spring semester, including breaks.
This shift coincides with the critical hours for student safety on
campus. Access
to University Facilities
- Administrative buildings are locked between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.
Unauthorized persons are not permitted in the buildings during these
hours. Residence directors can be
contacted to provide access to campus facilities after hours.
If it is necessary for an employee to gain admittance to a building that
is closed, proper identification must be presented to the custodial staff or the
director’s designee. (Policy Disclosure 2) Security Features of Residence Hall
Buildings and Rooms - Exterior doors to the residence halls are locked
twenty-four hours per day. Residents
are issued keys to gain entry through the main entrance.
Each room has a solid door with a locking device, and students are issued
keys for their rooms. When a lost/stolen room key is reported, a lock change is
ordered to prevent security risk. (Policy Disclosure 2) Procedures
for Reporting Criminal Actions

at (814) 938-6711. The university’s response to these reports is to take
immediate and appropriate action on behalf of the health, safety, and welfare of
all members of the campus. (Policy Disclosure 1,3,9) Residence

arise. Security guards routinely patrol inside and outside of the
residence halls. Safety
and Security Programs

During these meetings, security and enforcement procedures are outlined,
explained, and discussed as appropriate. Emergency
or special meetings are conducted if the need arises.
The residence life program is well known for its competent staff and for
providing opportunities for students to attend programs that contribute to their
overall development. Although residence hall discussions and programs often
focus on safety and security, personal safety is greatly enhanced when
individual residents take reasonable precautions. (Policy Disclosure 4,5) Safety
