 Many prospective students and their families, as well as prospective employees, have indicated their concern and interest in measures taken at colleges and universities regarding campus safety.

 At IUP, we understand and take seriously our responsibility to promote a campus environment that is safe for all members of the campus community.  At the same time, we recognize that IUP exists within a society in which crime does occur and that our university community may experience these same problems and concerns.  In order to effectively protect against these circumstances, it is important that all members of the community--faculty, administrators, staff and students--take appropriate precautions to enhance their personal safety and security.

 Long before the Pennsylvania legislature enacted the College and University Security Information Act, we began to evaluate and improve campus security and programs that contribute to the safety of our campus.  The evaluation process has resulted in heightened individual awareness about personal safety precautions and in the implementation of campus crime prevention programs.

 This edition of the IUP's Safety and Security report is in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy, the Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998, and the College and University Security Information Act (Act 73 of 1988).  As such, the crime statistics include additional information regarding the location where the crime occurred as well as university judicial referrals involving liquor law, drug law, and weapon law violations.

 We place an emphasis on crime prevention and improvement of our security measures.  We hope that the information provided in this publication will help to increase your personal awareness of safety and security in our campus community.  Please contact us if you would like copies of any of the documents referenced in this report.  In addition, an electronic version of the report is published at: www.iup.edu/police.
