IUP’s Department of Nursing and Allied Health Professions
and the St. Thomas More University Parish have been joined
this year by the IUP Department of Health and Physical
Education to present the Third Annual Health Fair on April
28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Thomas More University
Parish, 1200 Oakland Avenue.
New this year's event it Step Into Spring, a
mile-and-a-half or three-mile walk around the IUP track.
Persons interested in participating in the step into
spring walk should meet for registration from 8:30 to 8:45
a.m. in the parking lot of St. Thomas More University
Parish.
Participants will be escorted to the IUP track and guided
in stretching exercises by IUP Health and Physical
Education students. Water stations will be set up around
the track. There will be a free t-shirt for the first 80
registrants.
At the conclusion of the walk, participants will be
escorted back to St. Thomas More University Parish parking
lot. All who complete the walk and return to the
registration table will be eligible for one of three
drawings. Adults have a chance to win a three-month
membership to the James Mill Fitness Center, located in
Zink Hall on the IUP campus, and IUP students will have a
chance to win $200 cash.
The prize for the children participating in the walk is a
choice of a $250 partial scholarship to the IUP Footlight
Players or a full scholarship to the IUP Summer Kids
Activity Camp.
The health fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the
parish hall.
Highlights of the fair include:
• Stroke Risk Screening, Bone Density Screening, and
Diabetes Risk Screening conducted by nurses from IRMC;
• Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure Screenings provided
by IUP faculty and students
• Healthy Grilling, cooking classes especially developed
by the IUP Department of Culinary Arts. This half hour
class will be offered at 11 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
• Yoga for Stress Reduction, a 30-minute introduction to
Yoga offered at 11:00 a.m. and 1 p.m.
• Massage therapy from 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to
2:30 p.m.
Community agencies will join IUP graduate and
undergraduate students in the Nursing and Allied Health
professions in presenting information on various topics
for adults including recent changes in CPR procedures and
demonstration of the Automated External Defibrillator,
Recognizing Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease, Adult Fitness,
Arthritic Adaptive Devices, Controlling Cholesterol
through diet, and much more! Activities for children
include Bones and Muscles, Water Safety, Yummy in Your
Tummy, and Playground Safety tips. Face painting will be
offered.
Refreshments will be provided. Prizes, including five gift
certificates for the American Red Cross Adult and Child
CPR class, tickets to a Curves baseball game, gift
certificates to local restaurants and businesses, and
prizes for the children will be given away throughout the
day.
Parking is free in the IUP parking garage and church
parking lot.
The IUP Department of Nursing and Allied Health
Professions is located in Johnson Hall.
