A Message from President Atwater Regarding Student Death

March 23, 2007

It is with sadness that I inform you that Sara Michelle Khirkhah, 20, a sophomore psychology major from Clymer (Indiana County) passed away March 21 at Indiana Regional Medical Center. Sara was a resident of Elkin Hall and was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority.

The death of any member of our community is a tragedy that saddens us all. We are a campus family whose welfare and future are united across all departments, units, divisions and disciplines.

Our most immediate responsibility is to support one another and Sara’s family and friends as we mourn this loss together.

Support is available to students through the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services.

We will work with Sara’s family and friends in the creation of an appropriate university memorial service at a later date.

The Indiana County Coroner has announced that Sara’s cause of death was meningococcal meningitis.

Due to the nature of this illness, University Health Service is providing education and preventive treatment as needed to concerned members of the IUP community. Anyone with concerns should contact Pechan Health Center at 724-357-2550 or visit the Pechan Health Center.  here.

Pechan Health Center will have extended hours on Friday, March 22, until 7 p.m. Persons may also contact the Indiana Regional Medical Center Bork Emergency Center at 724-357-7121.
