Inclement Weather Policy
IUP is committed to the safety and security of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Therefore, the decision on whether or not classes or programs and events will be held during periods of adverse weather conditions is based on the overall concern for the university community. Because of the university's residential nature, IUP will remain open in all cases, and classes and events will continue as scheduled if at all possible during periods of inclement weather.

Should adverse weather conditions arise or if university officials anticipate conditions that would make it inadvisable to conduct classes or events on a given day, the president may, at his or her discretion, cancel classes or events.
Please do not call University Public Safety during severe weather. In the event of cancellation of classes or events, notification will be provided through the following:

  • IUP Information Line: 724-357-7538 (operates 24 hours a day)

  • Indiana Gazette

  • Radio: WDAD-AM 1450; WCCS-AM 1160; U-92 FM 92.5; KDKA-AM 1020; WTAE-AM 1250

  • Television: KDKA-TV (Channel 2); WTAE-TV (Channel 4); WJAC-TV (Channel 6); WPXI-TV (Channel 11)

  • IUP's homepage (www.iup.edu)

  • Reverse 911

Announcements will be made only if the university's regular operation is disrupted. Announcements will not be made indicating that IUP is open. Questions regarding the Inclement Weather Policy may be directed to the Office of Human Resources at 724-357-2431.

Register for Emergency Notification System
Students, faculty and staff, and parents may now register to be notified in the case of life-situations though the university's new mass-emergency warning system. The system, called Reverse 911, notifies registrants through university e-mail accounts, voice and text messaging to cell phones, and voice messaging to home phones.

All IUP e-mail addresses have been added to the system, as have all desk phones across campus. Those who wish to register additional phone numbers should log in to URSA. Registration information can be found on the Personal Information Screen under Insert/Update Cell Phone and Emergency Contact.

Parents who are interested in registering must ask their enrolled students to register on their behalf. By adding a phone number under "Home Phone Number."

The university's full emergency plan is now available online. Find phone numbers and tips at www.iup.edu/emergencyplan.
