MAATI Statement of Purpose

The purpose of MAATI is to combine academic expertise with the practical experience of two prominent alcohol and drug abuse treatment centers in order to provide the highest level of training and research for those who work in the substance abuse treatment field and related fields. MAATI combines academic resources with a treatment expertise to (1) provide state-of-the-art training on addiction treatment for substance abuse counselors and mental health professionals, (2) develop and coordinate intramural and extramural research projects among the three partners, and (3) provide internship and professional programs for graduate students entering the field.

MAATI has been notably successful in its training mission. Since 1988, MAATI has convened four professional training conferences a year in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on such topics as women and addiction, anti-social personality and treatment, adult children of alcoholics, and self-defeating behaviors. It convenes an annual five-day summer school at IUP featuring nationally recognized lecturers in the alcohol treatment, high-risk children, and domestic violence fields. The 1993 MAATI Summer School was held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics with over 500 in attendance.
