Statement of Purpose

Gateway Rehabilitation Center, founded in 1972 by internationally renowned alcohol and drug addiction treatment pioneer Dr. Abraham Twerski, is the regional leader in addiction treatment, offering an extensive network of inpatient and outpatient programs in Pennsylvania and in eastern Ohio through an affiliation with the Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic of Youngstown.  Among its many honors, Gateway has been listed as one of the 100 best rehab centers in the country and cited as one of the top 12 by Forbes magazine.

Private, not-for-profit Gateway provides daily treatment for approximately 1,700 people, ages 13 and older, and has treated more than 80,000 individuals since 1972.

In addition to its extensive network of treatment programs, Gateway provides comprehensive school-based prevention programs in 24 school districts for students in grades K-12.  The Back on Track employee assistance program provides confidential and cost effective policy development, supervisory training and consultation for 80 area employers and offers help for their employees struggling with a variety of personal problems, such as family concerns, illness, financial difficulties, stress, and drug and alcohol issues.

Dr. Kenneth Ramsey, Gateway president and chief executive officer since 1977, is a national leader in the drug and alcohol treatment field.  He is chairman of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers and a member of the Pennsylvania Advisory Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, appointed by Governor Ed Rendell in 2004.  Dr. Neil Capretto, a recognized expert in addiction treatment, has been medical director of Gateway since 1998.  A fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, he is a sought-after speaker at local, regional, and national conferences, workshops, and community events.
