Comment(s): The Prison
Experience, a writing-intensive special topics course, will provide
students with a view of prisons from the inside. Students will learn what
it is like to live and work in prisons from the perspectives of prisoners
and prison officers. Systematic research, expert observation, and
journalistic inquiry will be combined to furnish students with a portrait
of the challenges of those whose lives unfold and unravel on the blocks
and tiers and in the yards and workshops of American prisons. The
evolution of the modern prison and proposals for its reformation will be
reviewed and the purposes of prisons within a broad social context will be
examined. Requirements: The assignments for the course include reading
journals, book reviews, free writes, and essays. Branch Campus and
Learning Center students must obtain permission from their Dean before
registering for distance education courses. |

Comment(s): The purpose of this
writing-intensive course via WebCT is to examine the nature, trends,
context, causes, and responses to terrorism from a criminological
perspective. Students will be exposed to the central definitions,
classifications schemes, contexts, and explanations of terrorism along
with the opportunity to learn and apply Ken Wilber's all-quadrant,
all-level framework as an approach to understanding and responding to
terrorism. Requirements: The assignments for the course include reading
journals, book reviews, free writes, and essays. Branch Campus and
Learning Center students must obtain permission from the Dean before
registering for distance education courses. |
