Policy on Smoking in IUP Buildings and Facilities
It is a
policy of the State System of Higher Education and
Indiana University of Pennsylvania to respect the
preferences of both the nonsmoker and the smoker
in the State System of Higher Education buildings
and facilities, but when these preferences
conflict, the preference of the nonsmoker shall
prevail.
In
recognition of the health hazards of environmental
smoke for the nonsmoker, smoking shall be
restricted in State System buildings and
facilities as provided in guidelines propounded by
the Office of the Chancellor. The right of an
individual to protect his or her health shall take
precedence over an individual's desire to smoke.
In
recognition of the needs of the smoker, smoking
shall be permitted in designated smoking areas.
Smoking areas shall be designated that are
convenient, adequately ventilated, and
operationally feasible. Non-smoking areas also
will be designated.
Violations of the policy are to be referred to the
Vice President for Student Affairs on violations
involving students, with the exception of
violations which occur among students in residence
buildings, in which case a Resident Life staff
member shall be notified, or to the Office of
Human Resources in the case of violations
involving an employee.
