Virus Protection is a MUST! Here are some tips on how to keep your PCs healthy and on the net. Do you see this symbol on the bottom right hand corner of your screen? If you don’t, virus protection might not be running on your pc. Here’s how you download Virus protection: Start up your web browser and go to this web address: http://old.www.iup.edu/tsc/mcafee/ Read through this website, it explains how to download, install and keep your virus protection up to date. Save this website info, you’ll want to go back to it at least once a month to check for updates! Go to McAfee’s website to find out ways to avoid getting viruses: http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/virus_tips.asp Note: If you are using Norton Antivirus, make sure you update it regularly. If it is not updated it will not pick up new viruses. If you do not have the update plan with Norton to update their antivirus software we recommend you remove Norton Antivirus and install McAfee.
If you have Windows NT/2000 or XP running on your pc make sure you have an administrator password set! Check on this by clicking on logoff under the start menu and then use “administrator” as your username and don’t enter a password. If this lets you log onto your PC then you don’t have a password setup. Hit <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> and choose “change password” to setup an administrator password. We have had a number of PCs compromised because the PC was not secure. Another way to insure your PC doesn’t get a virus is to create an account without administrator rights and use it instead of logging on as administrator. This way, if you download a virus it will not have administrator rights and won’t be able to cause as much damage. Make sure you are up to date with all windows updates and security patches by going to: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ It will check your PC and help you install any new updates and patches you might need.
Don’t Use File sharing Programs! There is really no need since IUP offers a free alternative: Most file sharing programs such as Kazaa have other programs that come with them and get installed when they are first setup. We have found that many of these other programs, also known as spyware, can be harmful to your computer. If you have installed file sharing programs you can check to see if they installed spyware by running a program called adaware. Adaware is free to download at: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ File sharing programs are setup by default to share out files that are already on your pc to anyone on the internet. This could cause you to share out copyrighted material. Companies scan the internet for machines that are sharing out their copyrighted material. When they find someone on our network sharing copyrighted material they send a letter to the Technology Servicing Center. Once the TSC is notified they are legally bound to disable the port sharing the copyrighted material. You also can get your port disabled if you are allowing too many people to download files from your computer at one time. This could cause excessive bandwidth usage. When this happens the TSC needs to disable your port to keep the internet connection open for academic use. If you feel you must use file sharing software you can also stop other people from downloading your files and keep from distributing copyright material by disabling file sharing. Top Ten Ways to get your Ethernet port Disabled… 10. Use more than 10% of the University’s Internet Connection. 9. Share out copyrighted materials. 8. Don’t use virus protection 7. Don’t setup an administrator password. 6. Share out your hard drive and don’t give it a password. 5. Do a Denial of Service attack on another PC on the Internet. 4. Try to Hack or Scan another PC on the Internet. 3. Use a hub to hookup two PCs to one Ethernet port. 2. Attach a Wireless Access Point to your Ethernet port. And the #1 way to get your Ethernet Port disabled… Let your roommate plug into your port when his port was disabled for one of the above.
Attention Windows XP Home Users! Please check to make sure you only have one network connection enabled! The Home version of Windows XP sometimes tries to use an internet gateway or a network bridge connection. If you have either of these enabled on your PC under your network connections you could cause problems with the network. If it does cause a network problem your port would be disabled.
