Minimum Requirements

To use the basic services available through the in room Ethernet connection, a PC must be at least as powerful as the minimum requirements.  If you do not have the minimum requirements for hardware, software, and accessories listed below it will be difficult to set the PC up to use the connection.

CPU: Pentium III 800MHz
RAM: 256 MB Hard Drive: 10GB minimum
Network Card: 10/100 Base-T Ethernet Adapter
O/S: Windows XP Professional (or better)
Network Cable: Category 5 (CAT5) Patch Cable (at least 14’ long)

If your present PC does not meet these minimum requirements you might need to purchase a new PC.  If you have a Macintosh, it should have at least OSX.

Purchasing a New PC

When purchasing a new computer for use with IUP's residential network its best to get a PC that already has a built in Ethernet adapter.  Most PCs you buy new today come with one.  The Ethernet ports in the residence halls only work with Ethernet Adapters, not modems.
