Part of the North Quad, Elkin Hall is a five-story building located
along School Street near Oakland Avenue. Over 300 men and women
make Elkin Hall their home during the academic year.
Elkin Hall offer a smoke free environment. Residents and their guests are not permitted to smoke in their
rooms additionally, smoking is prohibited in all public or common areas like
hallways, stairwells, lounges, and restrooms. A portion of the first
floor houses English Majors. The second floor is all
male and houses our Computer Science majors, the third floor is our
Biology floor, the fourth floor accommodates Natural Science and Math
majors in Chemistry, Geosciences, Math, Physics and Psychology. Amenities
in the building include a kitchenette with a
microwave, vending
machines, laundry room, gameroom,
Residential Computer Center, and an air-conditioned lounge with a large
screen television. The IUP Cable Television Service,
internet connections, and local
telephone service is immediately available for student use.
Students must provide their own televisions, telephones, and/or computers.
Elkin offers 24 hour locked entrances.
Although rooms vary in size, the average room is 15’7”
x 11’11” (188 square feet) with a window measuring 5’0”
x 5’8” (w x h). The walls in Elkin are plaster with a
height slightly over eight feet. The rooms are equipped with two dressers,
closets, desks, two trash cans (one for recyclables and the other for regular
trash), and shelves. All desks are computer compatible, one per resident. The window has
a pull-down shade and a curtain rod that requires drapery hooks to attach
curtains; curtains are not provided. The two standard sized beds, desks,
desk chairs and dressers can be moved within the room; all other furniture is permanently
fixed. The standard bunk bed arrangement is 19” from floor to
the top of the lower mattress and 57” from the floor to the top of
the upper mattress; this arrangement allows approximately eight inches of
clearance under the lower mattress. Each closet has two sliding doors
and is complete with two hooks and a clothing rod. Lighting is provided
in the room via fluorescent lamps above the desks and overhead on the ceiling.
Residents are encouraged to decorate their rooms; however,
university-owned furniture cannot be removed from the room. Pictures
and posters can be hung using poster putty only. Nails, bolts,
tacks, glue, or other adhesives cannot be used to affix materials
to the walls. Requests for painting must be approved in advance
by the Residence Director. Students may NOT return prior to
the official opening of the residence hall to paint their rooms.
