Kevin Berezansky, Assistant Director "Free to question, our students develop the habit of mind to recognize and define problems, identify arguments on all sides of an issue and use relevant data to arrive at a carefully reasoned judgment when analyzing problems. No assumption is left unquestioned, no bias unexplored. The question "What therefore should I do?" ensures that thinking is not merely an end unto itself, but the basis for a philosophy of engagement with others. As a former high school English teacher, I would steal everything done here if I ever returned to the classoom. If college is more than just job training to you, this is the place to be educated." I am currently a freshman History major at the Robert E. Cook Honors College. I am obsessed with all facets of history, especially the Renaissance and Reformation period. I am starting off with a broad topic and hoping to narrow my major down, or add a second major, in possibly education. Last year I spent around 10 months studying and volunteering in Tel Aviv, Israel. It was one the most amazing opportunities I ever had and I can not wait till my next study abroad, hopefully in Ireland! On campus, I am active in the Fencing Club and enjoy some water aerobics on the side. I hope to become more involved in the Red Cross Club and the Jewish Student Union. I love anything with cheese, getting lost then realizing I found my way back, my family and friends, reading, horseback riding, and the color green. I can not wait to get to know the Cook Honors college even better, although I already feel at home here, and if you have any questions feel free to email me any time. |

I'm a sophomore with big ideas. Now, I just need to explore the best paths for me. I'm a dual degree student with majors of Psychology and INFA Dance Track. This is, of course, subject to change. Maybe I'll decide upon a different major or add in a minor or two. I refuse to restrict myself by seeing only limited options for my future. I transferred to the Cook Honors College from a different university, and it was the best college decision I could have made. The atmosphere of Whitmyre and the opportunities that are available to students are rare finds. On campus, I spend a great deal of my time dancing with the other members of the Dance Theater Company. I was a 2009 Orientation Leader. I am also a member of Honors Connection and German Club (because I enjoy new experiences, not because I speak a lick of German). I plan on joining Psi Chi, the psychology honor society. I also have plans to study abroad to somewhere intriguing when I have the opportunity. I love watching HGTV. Maybe I'll be an interior designer...

I am a sophomore Music Education major with a concentration in voice. I am also working on piano and violin minors. I discovered my passion for music went I went abroad in the summer of 2007 and toured with the Sound of America all across Europe. I then discovered my love of the Robert E. Cook Honors College in the Fall of my senior year of high school while I toured for IUP Main Campus. With the Cook Honors College I found an opportunity to challenge my thinking and with IUP’s superb music department I was able to challenge my talent. With the two combined I discovered a match too good to pass up. On campus I am actively involved in IUP’s Chamber Singers and Chorale Ensembles. I was also fortunate enough to be cast in this Fall’s opera production of “A Merry Widow.” I am proud to be an active member of the professional music fraternity Delta Omicron, the only co-ed professional music fraternity on campus, and I am this year’s elected Treasurer. Music and the Cook Honors College really do require the majority of my time, but when I do find time to relax I love to read! Jane Austen is by far my favorite author, but my favorite book is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I love Broadway and New York City! I love texting! Aruba is my second home. No really, my father is an Aruban! I can’t cook, but I love food! I’m friendly! E-mail me if you ever have a question! |

I am a Sophomore Philosophy and (probably) Economics double major. Last May I traveled to Turkey and Cyprus for five weeks, spent a week of that on a 14 person boat on the Mediteraenean, and all of it looking at ancient sites and seeing past cultures and what they left behind. Oh, and we learned how to play backgammon. On campus, I am involved with the Student Government, University Senate, the Co-Op Board of Directors, and Resolved. I love people, music (listening to it, since I don't play any instruments), ultimate frisbee, thinking, and swing dancing. Laughter is always called for, as is a good Jimmy Stewart movie. |

Activities in College: German Club (President), Business Honors, Association of Hospitality Management Students (AHMS) Anything Else Interesting About Me: I speak fluent German and am always up for a good conversation, I try everything at least once and a lot of things twice! Future Plans: Attend a manager-in-training program for six months in the hospitality industry, then be a front desk or food & beverage manager in a major Washington DC Hotel. |

Email: r.k.schwartzman@iup.edu I am a junior in the Cook Honors College with an International Studies major with a concentration in Africa and a minor in Pan-African studies. In the spring I am going to the University of Botswana for a semester abroad for both my major and minor. I am still deciding what I want to do, but I hope it has something to do with the Foreign Service, humanitarian aid, or agriculture in Africa. Over the summer I spent two weeks canvassing for the ACLU and as a counselor for SHP. I also used my time to re-read my favorite book, All the King’s Men, visit family in Vermont and Rhode Island, and go to Cape Cod. My life outside of academia is comprised of reading, especially the works of Jeanette Winterson, Djuna Barnes and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, cooking, hiking, and traveling. I speak some French, drink lots of coffee, and make really good split pea soup. |

Email: k.m.shumaker@iup.edu I am currently a sophomore Business Management major from New Bloomfield, PA. While I don't really have a passion for business, I'm hoping to take the skills I learn to one day remodel an old house and turn it into a Bed and Breakfast. On campus, I am part of the Business Honors program and I'm involved with Resolved and Cru (Christian goups), Phi Eta Sigma and Sigma Alpha Lambda (Honors Societies/Fraternities), and Bella Voce (service music group). During my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, reading, spending time with family and friends, riding bike, being in nature, and just generally having fun trying new things. |
