Jennifer Aaron
Frederick, MD
Major: Psychology
Minors: Biology and Computer Science
Jennifer Aaron knows exactly
why she picked her major and her double minor.
"I came to IUP undecided
and after taking my first Psychology class I was hooked. Because
you have to have a minor as a Psych major I choose Biology because
I felt its study of the body would compliment Psychology's study
of the mind. Then as a Junior, I picked up a Computer Science
minor because of the importance that technology will play in any
field that I wish to go into after college."
Turns out, Jennifer Aaron's interest in psychology
has deepened each semester. Sometimes, as Jennifer and other students
will tell you, it's wise to follow your instincts. Pursue those
things you like, those things you've come to care about, and you
may be making the wisest decision of your life.
"The discussion-oriented
classes are what attracted me to the Honors College. The whole
idea of having a Core class where discussion and not lecturing
is the norm made me jump at the idea of coming here. Then, getting
into psychology classes, I found things are very research-oriented
in the Psychology department. There is a big drive to get into
research with a professor before you graduate. Most of the professors
I've interacted with have been eager to help with class or in
pointing you in the right direction to get things done."
One of her first steps toward
setting longer-range goals was joining Psi Chi, the Psychology
Honors Society, a group that encourages research and gives students
the kind of practical experience that will help them stand out
among other applicants to graduate school. The next step, will
be to enter IUP's Honor's Program in Psychology (the department
also offers graduate courses, leading to a PsyD, or Doctor of
Psychology in clinical psychology). Jennifer, always eager to
move forward (and with the help of her advisor), got a jump-start
on Psych Honors last semester, taking the first of two graduate
level seminars in psychology.
"Right now I just like learning
about the different branches of Psychology. This summer I may
be attending a Summer Science Institute program which should help
me decide how much I like the research aspect of Psychology. But,
for now, I'm just enjoying learning."
As Jennifer Aaron continues to find her way
to whatever specialty in psychology will become her life's work,
whether in teaching, research or counseling, she has already set
high goals for what comes after graduation.
"I plan to attend graduate school,
preferably at Johns Hopkins University and, eventually
my dream job? -- I'd like to teach at the college level."
