Fellowship Advisor, Office of Fellowships, Meijer Honors College, Grand Valley State University (near Grand Rapids, Michigan)

Grand Valley State University is seeking applications for the position of Fellowship Advisor, to begin August 2009. The Fellowship Advisor will be responsible for understanding and maintaining up-to-date information on prestigious national and international scholarships and fellowships; recruiting and advising students, from the point of inquiry all the way through the application process; acting as the institutional representative to granting organizations; working with faculty, staff, and students to publicize opportunities; and participating in the National Association of Fellowship Advisors.

Qualifications:

Required: A master's degree. At least two years experience in higher education or comparable setting as an advisor; evidence of strong organizational and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively and independently; experience working with diverse populations; experience in publicizing opportunities (through print, websites, and networking),
recruiting candidates, facilitating and coordinating preparatory workshops.

Preferred: Experience in developing a multi-year recruitment plan, an understanding of the fellowship recruitment process, and knowledge of the best practices of fellowship and scholarship administration. Past recipients/applicants of major scholarships/fellowships encouraged to apply.

The Assistant Director is responsible for administrative and programmatic tasks related to the Undergraduate Research Office and the Fellowships and Scholarships Office. The offices work together to offer Carnegie Mellon students an opportunity to compete internally for undergraduate research awards and externally for selected national and international fellowship and scholarships. The position includes: gathering and disseminating of information; identifying, advising and assisting students; reading proposals and applications; working with faculty and staff across multiple disciplines; building connections with a national network of professionals connected to undergraduate research and fellowships/scholarships.

The Assistant Director will report to the Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. The Assistant Director will provide students with a full panoply of undergraduate research and fellowship opportunities, coupled with support services and creative programming to students in all disciplines. The main tasks include: development and implementation of strategies and programs to raise campus awareness of internal opportunities for undergraduate research and external scholarship opportunities; counseling of a diverse pool of undergraduate students and alumni; oversight of proposal writing and application process; the selection of campus representatives for various awards; connecting to the national, local and international fellowship and scholarship community; collaboration with faculty mentors; day-to-day administration of the Undergraduate Research Office and the Fellowships and Scholarships Office.

Minimum education: MA, required; Ph.D. desirable; strong writing and communication skills; strong counseling skills; strong organizational skills; ability to work well with a culturally diverse student body; ability to interact with a wide range of faculty and staff at a Research I University. Experience with fellowships and scholarships and/or undergraduate research desirable but not required.

Middle School English Teacher

Southern Teachers Agency, the oldest educational placement service in America, receives job listings from hundreds of PK-12 private schools around the South, many of which do not require teacher certification.

A private, college-preparatory school near Washington, DC, is seeking a Middle School English teacher to commence work in August 2009.

The teaching duties are expected to be in Grade 6.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the full life of the school by coaching athletic teams or supervising extracurricular activities.

Location: Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC

Work Begins: August 2009

Compensation: Salary range is $41,500 - $81,000. Good benefits package.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in English or English Education. Excellent communication and leadership skills. Strong academic record. Teacher certification not required, but if a candidate has not gone through a teacher education program, then he/she must have significant other experience working with middle-school students, e.g., as a camp counselor or coach.
