Health Care

  • What do I do if I am sick and need to see a doctor?

There are doctors, nurse practitioners, and nurses as the Pechan Health Center which is located at the corner of Maple and Pratt. Pechan is open Monday-Friday during the fall and spring semester from 9am-4pm.

  • Does the health center offer contraceptive care and other sexual health services?

The health center considers the local Family Health Council (now called Adagio Health) a partner in the provision of care to IUP students. They offer quality and cost effective contraceptive services, as well as STD screening at no cost for men or women.   For more information about Adagio Health visit: http://www.adagiohealth.org

The Center for Student Life - Health Awareness offers many resources regarding contraceptive care and sexual health. Health Awareness is supported by your student health fee.  You can visit them on line at <http://old.www.iup.edu/healthAWAREness>.

The health center does offer several related services:
*Emergency Contraceptive services ($25.00)
*Condoms and dental dams at the medical records office (currently no cost)
*Screening for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) for $15.00 to cover the lab work
*Our services also include annual pap tests and breast exams for woman (lab work is not included in the health fee)
*If a student wishes to have their "depo" injections at the health center they need to have the prescription from their personal gynecologist.  Our medical staff will provide the injections.  Call ahead to discuss how to access the depoprovera injection service at the health center.

  • Do you still have a Health Education office?

IUP's Health Educators are now a part of the Center for Student Life in Pratt Hall.  Your health fee covers the cost of the programs and services offered by Health AWAREness. For information about the programs and services offered by the Center for Student Life's "Health AWAREness" office link to Health Awareness.  You can link to the Health AWAREness web site to use self-assessment tools for alcohol use as well as screenings for depression and eating disorders.

  • Am I required to get the vaccination for meningococcal meningitis?

If you live in a university owned and operated residence, you should read the page about "Living in a residence hall or apartment? Have a question about the meningitis vaccination?"

  • What does it cost to be seen at the Health Center?

Visit the link on our web site about Health Fees for information about the cost of services.

  • Can I get a medical excuse for missed classes?

The Health Center staff do not write excuses for missed classes. If a student is seen at the Health Center, s/he is given a copy of the visit registration which documents the day and time of the visit. A student may choose to show this to a professor as a record of having to miss a class due to a medical appointment.  We cannot verify an illness that occurred prior to your care at Pechan Health Center.

  • What do I do if I have a medical emergency?

Call 911 or if you are using an on-campus phone dial 9-911 for emergency transportation to Indiana Regional Medical Center's Emergency Department. The student Health Fee A covers the cost of ambulance transportation to Indiana Regional Medical Center at no direct cost to you.

  • What if I don’t have a medical emergency but think I need immediate care?

If the Health Center is open come directly to Pechan. Be sure to tell the staff of your immediate need.

If the Health Center is closed, call campus police at (724) 357-2141 and ask to be transported to Indiana Regional Medical Center.

  • I am curious about some basic health questions but I don't have any immediate health care needs. Do you recommend any health related web sites for college students?

We think you will enjoy "Go Ask Alice", click here.  This web site is an excellent resource.  Remember, never let surfing the web replace getting answers from your health care provider if you have signs and symptoms of an illness.

  • Does the Health Center offer counseling services?

Counseling Services are offered at the IUP Center for Counseling and Psychological Services in 307 Pratt Hall. Their web address is:  http://old.www.iup.edu/counselingcenter/
