Application Instructions

How to Apply

  1. Apply online or request a paper version of the application. Click here to download form in .pdf format.
  2. Submit official transcripts from every college or university attended, including those institutions from which a degree was not obtained. Transcripts must be sealed by the registrar and remain sealed until their arrival at the School of Graduate Studies and Research. These can be sent directly from the Registrar's Office or included with your application materials. IUP undergraduates are not required to submit official transcripts for degree(s) earned at IUP.
  3. Submit at least two letters of recommendation.
  4. Professional Recommendation Form (DOC)

    Programs requiring three letters include:

      Administration and Leadership Studies, Human Services (Ph.D.)
      Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)
      Psychology (Psy.D.)
      Criminology (Ph.D.)

  5. Submit a signed and dated goal statement indicating career and academic goals.
    Specific goal statement guidelines for applicants to the Department of Counseling programs (Community Counseling and Counselor Education) are posted online at the Department of Counseling web site.
  6. Submit a non refundable application fee in the amount of $30.00. This fee may be mailed or paid by credit card. Please contact the Bursar's Office by calling 724-357-6461 to make credit card payments.

The following departments require the submission of official test scores prior to admission:

Business: GMAT scores
School Code for MBA: XW7-9H-96
School Code for EMBA: XW7-9H-18

Note: IUP's Testing Center is currently not providing GMAT testing due to vendor changes. Please visit www.mba.com to obtain further GMAT testing information.

School Psychology (D.Ed.): Praxis II


The following departments require the submission of official GRE scores (general test) prior to admission:
Administration and Leadership Studies, Human Services
Criminology (Ph.D.)
Educational Psychology (M.Ed.) and certification
Food and Nutrition
Geography
History
Information Technology (minimum combined score of 900, or GMAT score of no less than 450)
Nursing (Ph.D.) - Includes analytical writing component
Public Affairs
Psychology (Psy.D.)
School Psychology (D.Ed.)
Sociology
Speech-Language Pathology (M.S.) Note: Evidence of passing Praxis I scores may be submitted in lieu of GRE scores for the Speech-Language Pathology program.

In addition to the general test, the Clinical Psychology doctoral program requires the Psychology subject test.

Additional Requirements
Applicants to the following programs must submit the following, additional items:

Business (Executive Track) - GMAT scores and resume
Clinical Psychology - Three letters of recommendation, GRE scores (including subject test scores)
Criminology (Ph.D) - Three letters of recommendation, GRE scores, writing sample
Curriculum and Instruction (D.Ed.) - Online writing sample and 5-minute video presentation. These items are to be submitted directly to the Department of Professional Studies in Education (PSE). Additional information is located online at the PSE website.
Education (MEDU) - Must attend one information session
Educational and School Psychology - GRE Scores;Prais II (School Psychology D.Ed. and post-certification applicants)
Elementary Education - Praxis I test (PPST) and 5-minute video presentation, to be submitted directly to the Department of Professional Studies in Education. Additional information is located online at the PSE website.
Food and Nutrition - GRE scores
Geography - GRE scores
History - GRE scores
Information Technology - GRE verbal and quantitative score (combined) greater than or equal to 900, or GMAT score greater than or equal to 450.
Nursing (Ph.D.) - Official GRE scores including analytical writing; Nursing License;Curriculum Vitae

Public Affairs - GRE scores
Safety Sciences - Resume
Sociology - GRE scores
Speech-Language Pathology - Evidence of passing the Praxis I or GRE scores with a combined verbal and quantitative score of 900 or above.
Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) - Resume, SAHE Personal Data Form and a student affairs interest statement. Please submit SAHE items to IUP's SAHE department in Stouffer Hall, Room 226; Indiana, PA 15705

Instructions for Foreign Applicants

  1. A Foreign Student Financial Statement (available online as PDF and Word documents) must be submitted in addition to the application materials listed previously. International students must document the ability to assume full responsibility for the cost of graduate education. The estimated amount needed is $19,500 for the 2007-2008 academic year for graduate students for food, housing, travel, books, and fees. The amount may change for later admissions, as tuition and/or living expenses may increase. The Affidavit of Support (I-34) may be included with the application materials. Note: Applications will not be processed without an acceptable financial statement and application fee.
  2. Transcripts must have the university ink symbol or embossed seal to be considered official.
  3. Official TOEFL scores must be submitted to The School of Graduate Studies and Research directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). If you have graduated with a degree from an accredited American institution of higher education, the TOEFL will be waived after you have provided IUP with an official copy of the transcript showing the degree conferred.

  4. Due to the procedural changes in our Pennsylvania banking system, we are no longer able to accept foreign checks. There are three acceptable options:

5. Applicants will be issued an I-20 by the Office of International Affairs following formal acceptance to The School of Graduate Studies and Research. The International Student Advisor will then send information about arrival dates, housing, etc. Applicants with questions about legal matters, certificates of eligibility (I-20), etc., should write directly to:

6. Upon arrival at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, or as soon as the information is known, you must update your local address by following the address change instructions on www.iup.edu/ursa or by contacting the Registrar's Office in Clark Hall.

7. Each academic year the Registrar's Office makes available a directory of names and addresses of graduate students attending IUP. If you do not wish to have your name, address and telephone number included in this directory, you may contact the Registrar's Office in writing.
