How
will my gift help?
Your gift to IUP will support the activities of the university, ensuring that excellence is maintained and that it remains accessible to students, regardless of their means.
The university does have a number of general funding priorities. These include
scholarship support for students; strengthening the IUP
library; expanding technology in the
curriculum; the Student Opportunities
Fund; and creation of the planned Regional Development
Center, an economic development effort.
The university also has dozens of existing funds that serve specific interests. In giving to IUP, you may choose to give to any of these
restricted funds.

Scholarship Support
Currently, more than 85 percent of IUP’s students receive some form of financial aid. But the need of our students is far greater than the funds available: on average, the amount of educational debt accumulated by an IUP student (upon graduation) exceeds $14,000.00. Obtaining more funds to support student scholarships will enable IUP to continue to meet its acclaimed mission of providing access to excellence.
In addition to providing assistance to financially needy students, IUP must provide more scholarships based on academic merit. These awards enable the university to recruit today’s most promising students – students who contribute to the vitality and challenge of the classroom and are most likely to become tomorrow’s preeminent professionals, dedicated educators, applauded artists, and civic leaders.
Donors have a number of options. Among them: creating an endowed fund; supporting an existing scholarship in an area of interest or in honor of someone; joining with alumni and friends to create a general college-based scholarship fund. Questions?

Strengthening the IUP Library
At the heart of the university is the library, which supports learning experience and the research of faculty members. Additionally, the collections of the library serve as a community resource throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. The IUP Library is one of the largest resources for print and non-print holdings within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania – a valuable resource that must continue to evolve.
In strengthening the library, the university is planning to enhance the print collection, especially in the social sciences and the humanities; improve technology, especially electronic access to scholarly journals and databases; and build an endowment – a fund that supports the library in perpetuity. Expanding Technology in the Curriculum
With the help of technology, education has changed from teacher-centered instruction, in which the professor lectures and the students take notes, to student-centered instruction, in which the professor facilitates student exploration. Learning is more active, more multifaceted, and more independent.
To provide a student-centered approach, IUP must increase the number of electronic classrooms in all areas of concentration, from fine arts to sciences and mathematics. In addition, IUP must provide training to its professors; there are tools in place – the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Instruction Design Center - but their programs need the kind of financial support that will ensure IUP’s excellence into the next decade. Such support reaches into every classroom in the university, sharpening research skills, sparking new questions, and instilling a life-long love of learning.

Student Opportunity Fund
In a society that’s increasingly complex and global, education frequently extends beyond the classroom. The Student Opportunity Fund provides that out-of-the-classroom enrichment in the form of field trips, internships, global exchanges, and study abroad programs. The fund also supports the Freshman Year Experience program, career and academic mentoring programs, and visiting performers and program speakers. Support for this fund will help IUP ensure that a range of experiences flank and enhance traditional academic work, put students in touch with real-world jobs and situations, and give them the opportunity to engage in other cultures.

Regional Development Complex
Recognizing economic challenges facing western Pennsylvania, IUP has partnered with the community to develop a new economic development effort. Still in its planning stages, the Regional Development Complex will enhance the learning, technology support, and recreational opportunities of the region. It will contain three major components: a Major Events Center, a Continuing Education Center, and a Corporate Technology Training and Support Center. In addition to attracting and servicing technology-based businesses, the complex is expected to provide corporate training facilities, attract conferences, conventions and trade shows, host large-scale entertainment events, and provide state-of-the-art commencement and indoor athletics facilities for the university and high schools.
