Through her job in housekeeping, my mother nurtured IUP students just like they were her own children, listening to their problems, celebrating in the accomplishments and wishing them well, but also feeling a little sad when they left the university for the “real” world. The students with whom she came in contact always knew they could depend on my mother to be there for them, just as she was for my sister and me. Rose Rebovich understood the most important reason for her, or anyone else for that matter, to be employed at IUP – to be of service to our students in any way possible, to make their experience here at IUP one that will benefit them and prepare them for their futures. We have a name for what all of this encompasses – the Student Experience.

Like my mother, I’m very thankful to be employed by IUP and realize how important it is for all of us to be committed to doing the best job possible to make IUP the best experience possible for all of our students, no matter which department we work in. It's true that I don’t encounter as many students in my work in the Cogeneration plant as my mother did in her daily work in the residence halls and the library, but I have formed strong relationships with many students in my ten years as an assistant coach for the IUP ice hockey teams. I’ve met many students from diverse backgrounds, single-parent families--kids needing support away from home or kids needing something to fill a void or something they were lacking. And while coaching, I’ve met many students who were very committed to giving back to IUP and the community through public service programs provided at the ice hockey rink and other offices on campus. These students understand the important of giving back and helping to make a difference.

That’s why I’ve chosen another way to give back to IUP and the students here. Years ago, I began having a small amount deducted from each paycheck for an Annual Fund contribution. That bi-weekly, painless, contribution has grown over the years, and is now know as the Rose Rebovich Memorial Scholarship. It will benefit the student experience of an ice hockey player – possibly buying that student’s books for a semester or just helping to meet daily living expenses. Sometimes that’s tough for students, you know. My mother passed away before she knew about the establishment of this scholarship, but she would be happy to know that it will help to make a difference in a student’s experience at IUP.

I challenge each of you to help to make that difference for our students, too. Please consider a biweekly payroll deduction pledge, dedicated to an area of the student experience about which you feel strongly, or to the general Student Experience fund. Just call the staff in the Annual Fund office (724-357-5555). They would be glad to guide you in your gift decision. But please, make a difference by making gift today – small gifts over time do add up!

Sincerely,

Steve Rebovich
