Dr.
John
Benhart,
in
collaboration
with
IUP
faculty
from
the
Departments
of
Anthropology,
History,
and
Geosciences,
wrote
a
grant
proposal
that
was
funded
by
the
National
Science
Foundation
(NSF)
for
the
acquisition
of
state-of-the-art
equipment
for
field data
collection.
The approximately
$298,000
grant will
allow
the
purchase
of
global
positioning
system
(GPS)
and
geophysical
equipment
that
will
allow
the
mapping of surface
and
sub-surface
aspects
of
research
sites
both
in
western
Pennsylvania
and
abroad.

professor
Dr.
Calvin
Masilela,
in
cooperation
with
Ms.
Hilary
Staples, has
written
a
successful
proposal
for
the
funding
through
the
U.S.
Department
of
Educations
of
the
Upward
Bound
Math
and
Science
program
at
IUP.
The
$1.25
million
grant
will
provide
programming
to
strengthen
the
math
and
science
skills
of
high
school
students,
and
encourage
them
to
pursue
post-secondary
education
and
careers
in
these
fields.

Dr.
Brian
Okey
was
awarded
a grant
for
$10,000
by the
Center
for
Rural
Pennsylvania
to model
potential
conflict
areas
between
wind
energy
developments
and
wildlife.
The
project
will
combine
wind
speed
and
Natural
Heritage
Inventory
data in
a
geographic
information
system
(GIS) to
produce
township-level
maps
usable
by local
planning officials. It
will
focus on
areas of
the
state
with
consistent
wind
speeds
of 16
mph
(Class
4) or
greater.
The maps
will aid
in
identifying zones
most
appropriate
for wind
turbines.
Dr.
Kevin
Patrick
recently
wrote
an
article
for
the
Indiana
Gazette
newspaper,
identifying
the
"Top Ten
Most
Interesting
Building
in
Indiana,
PA."
Dr.
Patrick,
a specialist
in
cultural
and
urban
geography,
chose
the
ten
structures that
in
his
opinion
"contribute
the
most
to
the
borough's
collective
built
environment."
