2008 General Biology II Elective Lab Program

Descriptions
The elective lab
program is designed to give you freedom and flexibility in choosing and
scheduling some of your general biology labs. Each elective lab is
designed to be educationally sound and also enjoyable. You may
choose labs in an area in which you already know you have an interest;
however, we also encourage you to choose labs to broaden your
experiences. You will not meet with your regularly scheduled lab
section after the week of March 17 - 20.
The elective lab program
will be worth a maximum of 40 points, representing 40% of your lab
grade. These points will be added to your formal lab points for
your final lab score. You have the responsibility of
signing up for and attending labs worth a total of 40 points.
The number of points a particular lab is worth depends upon the length of
the lab; this information will be given on the posted schedule and
sign-up sheet. Labs of various lengths will be offered every day of
the week at many different times - including labs very early in the
morning and labs in the evening. A few may be scheduled at various
times while regularly scheduled labs are still meeting; however, most of
them will be scheduled during those last five weeks allocated to the
elective lab program. Under no circumstances are you to cut a
class in order to attend an elective lab. This is not considered an
“excused absence” for any class, including General Biology lecture.
After February 5th the complete schedule of elective labs will be
posted in lab room 112, on the bulletin boards located outside of Weyandt
32 and across from Weyandt 112, and on the General Biology web site at www.iup.edu/generalbio.
Use this posted schedule to prepare a list of labs of your
preference. Also prepare a backup list in case your first choices
are no longer available.
Some
popular labs worth 32 points will be scheduled for all-day trips and will
be available to you through a lottery system. You will receive one
lottery card during a regular lab period and will be able to enter one
lottery for one of these longer trips. If you wish to go on
one of those trips, you must put your lottery card for that trip in the
red box in (or near) room 110 before NOON on Friday, February 8.
Descriptions of these labs will be available before that time.
The winners of the lotteries will be posted on the bulletin boards
outside rooms 32 and 112 on Monday, February 11. Check to see
if your name is included on the list, and if it is, you must confirm your
seat for the trip (and pay any fees if necessary) with the appropriate
professor as posted. Lottery winners who have not confirmed
their seats by the posted date will lose their tentatively reserved seats.
Also refer to the separate instructions for the lottery labs on page 4.
THE SIGN-UP FOR ALL ELECTIVE LABS NOT
REGISTERED FOR BY A LOTTERY WILL OCCUR ON SATURDAY, FEB. 23, from 10:00-noon in room 110 Weyandt Hall.
An additional scheduling
period for elective labs will be held on Monday, Feb. 25 in
Weyandt 119, from 3-6 pm, for those students not
able to register for labs on Saturday.
You have the
responsibility of signing up for your elective labs on those days.
You may have a friend or lab partner sign up for you if you are unable to
be present; the information that is required is your phone number, lab
instructor, and list of desired labs (which fit into your schedule).
NO OTHER SIGN-UP TIMES WILL OCCUR LATER IN THE SEMESTER!
Sign-up will
occur in the two General Biology laboratory rooms, Weyandt 110 and
112. Each room will contain the sign-up sheets for the various
scheduled labs, and a professor will be at each table with sign-up
sheets. Line up in the hall (toward the Oak Grove) to enter room
110 to begin the process. If you miss both of the two sign-up days,
you will not have reserved seats in any of the labs. Make arrangements
to have a friend or lab partner register you for labs if you are not
able to attend the sign-up! They will need your phone number, your
regular lab day & time, and your regular lab professor’s name in
order to sign up for you.
REPEAT:
If you miss both sign-up days listed above, you will not be registered
for any labs (no spaces will be reserved for you). You may show up
for a scheduled lab at the listed time and location, and hope for a seat
on a stand-by basis only.
Each
student will be issued an Individual Elective Laboratory Schedule Card
(IELS Card) upon arrival at the sign-up location on February 23rd.
To sign up for a particular lab, record the appropriate lab information
on your IELS Card and enter your name on the sign-up sheet for that
lab. A professor will verify your entries. When you have
scheduled your 40 points, two copies will be taken and you will keep a
third. One copy will go to central records and the other to your
lab professor. Tape your copy of your scheduled labs into your lab
manual for future reference.
Being in the right place at the right time is your responsibility.
Be sure to
note any special instructions on the sign-up sheet. A few labs may
have an extra charge because of their unusual expense. Be sure to
wear appropriate clothing for the lab.
No lab quizzes will be given during the
Elective Labs; however, you should expect that there will be some
in-class interactive assignment (e.g., a worksheet). You earn the point value of the labs by
attending and participating in the labs. To receive credit your active
participation is required.
When you attend
an elective lab, you will sign an attendance card. This card will
be given to your regular lab professor, who will keep a tally of the
points you accumulate. It is your responsibility to make sure you
sign this card during the lab and give it to the professor in charge of
that lab. Not signing a card or forgetting to turn it in will
result in your not getting credit for the lab.
When you
sign your name on the sign-up sheet you have made a firm commitment to
attend the lab. Your reservation probably prevented another student
from signing up for the lab. If you must miss one of your
scheduled labs (for whatever reason), then there is no penalty as
such, but you do not get credit for the lab. You may make up those
missed points, but only on a stand-by basis; you only have
reservations for your original 40 points. Check the posted master
schedule of labs and just show up at an elective lab. If
there is a space available caused by an absence, then you
may attend and earn the points. If there is no space
available, then you will not be able to attend that lab but may try again
at a different lab. Do this as soon as possible after missing a
lab, since the end of the semester is bound to be crowded with hopeful
standbys. Write your name on the chalkboard when you
arrive as a standby, then tell the lab professor immediately before the
lab that you are a standby student. Seats will be limited by
available space and/or supplies for that lab. No extra credit is
available; you may attend more labs for your own benefit on a stand-by
basis.
If
attending sufficient elective labs (40 points) presents a problem for you
due to a legitimate conflict or an extended illness, notify your
professor before the end of the semester.
Elective
Lab Lotteries
1. You may only
put your name in for one lottery trip. Each of you will get
one lottery card during a regularly scheduled lab period. Any
duplicate entries will result in all your cards being removed, and you
become ineligible for any of the lottery trips.
(Yes, this has happened
in the past.)
2. Complete
the lottery card and drop it into the locked, red box in or near room 110
by noon, Friday, February 8.
3. On Monday,
February 11, check the bulletin board in the hall across from room
112 or the bulletin board near room 32 to see if you are a winner (or an
alternate). If you are not a winner, don’t give up hope yet.
4. If you
are a winner, see the professor in charge of the lab to obtain your
confirmation slip and pay any appropriate fees as instructed on the
posted, lottery-winner instruction sheet. Failure to do so will
forfeit your seat in the lab.
5. If you are
not a winner, further check the bulletin boards on and after Monday, Feb.
7th to see if seats have become available in any of the
lottery labs. If they are, follow the posted instructions for that
particular lab. Note that alternates in the original lottery may
have a priority time to schedule these extra seats - check the posted
instructions.
6. Winners
of 32-point lotteries must attend the sign-up session on
Saturday, Feb. 23 (or Monday, February 25) to add on a lab for the 8 additional points. This will
bring their total up to 40 points worth of elective labs that they are
registered for.
7. If for some
legitimate reason you are unable to attend a lottery lab for which you
signed up and confirmed a seat, be sure to attend other elective labs on
a stand-by basis to make up the lost points. Do this as soon as
possible before the end of the elective lab program.
