Description of General Biology I & II

General Biology I and General Biology II ( BIOL 103 & 104 ) are 4-credit courses designed to fulfill the Liberal Studies Natural Science requirement of a two-semester laboratory course sequence.  Offered during the fall semester, General Biology I covers the topics of ecology, cell structure and function, and genetics, then concludes with the unifying concept of evolution.  The laboratory schedule for this course begins with 5 weeks of outdoor activities.  Students are taken to off-campus sites in order to investigate the concepts of populations, communities, and ecosystems.  The remainder of the weekly lab exercises are held indoors, and examine topics such as fermentation, cells and osmosis, human genetics, and natural selection.

General Biology II is offered during the spring semester, and explores the topics of plant and  animal physiology, reproduction, and development, and animal behavior.  The practical applications of these topics to everyday life are emphasized.  The laboratory schedule for this course differs from General Biology I in that the regular two-hour labs will meet for the first eight weeks of the semester only.  After that, the Elective Lab Program begins, in which students choose the labs they are interested in attending for their final 10 hours of lab experience.  The list of lab offerings covers a wide range of topics and involves over a dozen different professors.  Elective labs may be indoor or outdoor activities lasting from 2 to 6 hours, or they may be all day field trips.

It is the intent of the faculty that all students leave the General Biology program sufficiently prepared to understand such current news topics as genetic engineering, DNA fingerprinting, organ transplant rejection, and cloning. Both courses should enable one to develop a deeper understanding of the major biological concepts, an enduring interest in the various branches of life science, and a greater appreciation of the phenomenon of “life”.
