A descriptive and conceptual course in physics
for the non-Science major. High school physics is not a prerequisite.
Course content is designed to develop an understanding and appreciation of the
physical world around us, to produce changes in attitude and background
essential for our modern society, and to clarify the following topics:
motion, heat, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of matter.
This course has a lab and lecture section,

A unified approach to the study of
thermodynamics through use of statistical methods. Temperature, entropy,
chemical potential, and free energy are introduced and applied to a monatomic
ideal gas and systems of fermions and bosons in quantum and classical regions.

free and forced harmonic motion. Treatment of these topics utilizes vector
calculus and differential and integral calculus.
PHYS 545 Optics I
Main concepts of modern optics utilized in
areas of geometrical, wave, and quantum optics. Includes presentation of
illustrative examples in areas of laser technology, complex optical systems,
interferometry, and spectroscopy.
