Peer Advisors

Peer Advisor is unlike any other paraprofessional position on campus!  Under the guidance of a faculty Educational Advisor, peer advisors assist an assigned caseload of students with their academic, social, and personal adjustment and concerns.  They assist students through the delivery of support services including study skills, academic and career planning.  Also, they maintain accurate records of student contacts and encourage student's active participation with the Learning Center/Act 101 Program.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Serve as a mentor and role model to freshmen.
  • Help facilitate the first-year transition from high school to college by assisting students in academic, social, and career decision making.
  • Assist LEC faculty in the delivery of support services in the areas of freshman seminar application and study skills.
  • Conduct individual and group meetings with students from assigned caseload of students.
  • Maintain accurate records of student contacts.
  • Encourage active student participation with LEC/Act 101 programming.
  • Serve as an Ambassador for the LEC/Act 101 Program and IUP.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Sophomore or junior standing.
  • Above average cumulative grade point average (2.60 + cgpa).
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must have basic understanding of university policies and procedures as they relate to academic and student life.

TRAINING:

  • Selected Peer Educators are required to successfully complete a 1-credit training course.

REMUNERATION:

  • Minimum wage at approximately 10 hours per week (but may vary).
  • Secure two recommendations with at least one from IUP faculty/staff and the other from a previous employer, volunteer supervisor or community leader.
