The Big Tree Project

A search conducted by the Tree Awareness Coalition Committee of Welcome to Indiana

Following a six month search, the Tree Awareness Coalition of the Welcome to Indiana group has identified what its members believe are the biggest trees of 17 species in Indiana County.  One hundred trees were nominated by people from all areas of the county.  Circumference of a tree was made 41/2 feet above the ground and the value then divided by 3.1416 to get the diameter of the tree.  The diameter was then multiplied by a species-specific number (i.e. White oak-5) established by the International Society of Arboricultural which gave the tree’s approximate age in years.  Additional nominations may be sent to Mr. Jerry Kozusko, 1321 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA 15701. 

Note:  The approximate age of some tree species was determined by multiplying the diameter in inches times a factor established by the International Society of Arboricultural.  The Indiana County Service Forester made circumference measurements. 11/16/2003
