This
report summarizes the activities of the Allegheny Arboretum Board from July
1, 2005 through June 30, 2006, and presents some of the activities the board
would like to pursue in the coming fiscal year.
1. The “Tree Tour Map and Guide” to the labeled campus trees was completed
and submitted to the University Office of Publications for development.
2. The plants in the Campbell Rock Garden were labeled.
3. Plant stakes and labels for the Touch and Smell Garden were purchased by
the arboretum and installed by members of the Evergreen Garden Club of
Indiana.
4. The trees in Indiana Memorial Park were identified and mapped for future
labeling. Labels will indicate that this is the “Allegheny Arboretum at
Memorial Park”.
5. The East Lawn solicitation mailing by the Office of Annual Giving
resulted in ten gifts ranging from $10-1,250. Total donations amounted to
$1,610.00.
6. Established an Allegheny Arboretum office in 301 Gordon Hall at IUP.
7. An additional ten trees were planted on campus.
These included two additional persimmon (Diospyros
virginiana) trees that were planted in the East Lawn area north of Ackerman
Hall. This was done to insure fruit development since persimmon is a
dioecious plant.
* An additional tree (shingle oak – Quercus imbricaria) was planted in the
Oak Grove. This raises the total to nine trees that have been planted in the
Oak Grove.
* An apple serviceberry (Amelanchier x grandiflora) was planted in the
Campbell Farm Rock Garden.
* An Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra) was planted between Leonard and
McElhaney Halls. This completes the planting of trees along “Aesculus Alley”
were nine different Aesculus species can be observed.
* Three osage-orange (Maclura pomifera) trees were planted near the R & P
Band parking lot.
* A ‘Valley Forge’ American elm (Ulmus americana ‘Valley Forge’) was planted
north of Flag Stone Theater. This tree was developed by the National
Arboretum.
*An alternate-leaf dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) was planted east of the
Touch & Smell Garden.
Accession tags were placed on all newly planted trees.
8. Two additional benches were placed in the Oak Grove and all benches that
have been purchased have been labeled. A total of ten benches have been
purchased. The cost for purchasing a bench was raised to $1,500.00 effective
January 1, 2006.
9. The following changes occurred in the Allegheny Arboretum Board
membership.
* Mr. John Cuccaro from Trim Tree Nursery in Indiana became a new member.
* Mrs. Bonnie Juliette from the Development Office and Foundation for IUP
was replaced by Ms. Pamela Fetterman, Director of the Office of Donor
Relations.
10. The Allegheny Arboretum and the University Museum at Indiana University
of Pennsylvania presented two exhibitions from April 21-May 12. Half of the
show featured original prints, drawings, and watercolors from the collection
of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon
University. The other half of the show contained informational displays
about the Allegheny Plateau region in which Indiana is located, the history
of the lumbering industry in Indiana County, the Campbell Farm Rock Garden,
and an overview of Arboretum projects. A sample panel for the Arboretum’s
Recognition Hall, a prototype of the Recognition Wood Tile engraved with the
new Arboretum logo, and the white oak cross-section display created by IUP’s
Center for Turning and Furniture Design were also displayed. An opening
reception attended by 89 people was held on April 21st. At the reception
floral arrangements designed by members of the Evergreen Garden Club and the
Indiana Garden Club, cosponsors of the opening reception, were on display. A
total of 225 people attended the museum show.
11. The board worked with Mr. Chris Weiland, representing IUP’s Center for
Turning and Furniture Design, on several projects. These included: the
completion of the oak cross-cut display which hopefully will be placed in
Sutton Hall, the completion of a prototype for the Recognition Hall display,
completion of a prototype of the Recognition logo wood tile, and discussion
concerning the proposed construction and landscaping of the drying wood shed
at the site of the old Campbell farm barn located on the IUP south campus.
12. Student projects:
* Dr. Dennis Ausel from the Communications and Media Department had his
class in Electronic Imaging develop posters that could be used for marketing
the arboretum.
* Dr. Whit Watts from the Department of Geography & Regional Planning had
students in his Planning Design I class develop a Draft Concept Plan for The
Stapleton Plaisance which would be located south of Stapleton Library. The
students gave a presentation to the board or their proposal, which was
strongly supported by the board. A three-dimensional model of the Plaisance
was displayed at the museum show. The students hope to be able to present
their proposal to the university’s administration.
13. Members of the board had meetings with the following to discuss the
development of the arboretum and/or possible funding sources.
* Mr. Joe Pittman, Senator Don White’s assistant
* Ms. Kathy Frankel, Supervisor from the Department of Conservation &
Natural Resources
