~ Dr. John E. (Jack) Frank '58 ~

Dr. John “Jack” Frank has been named a 2006 distinguished alumnus for his outstanding dedication and service to his alma mater for more than fifty years.  Dr. Frank graduated from IUP in 1958. He attended IUP on the G.I. Bill after serving in the U.S. Navy. His positive impact on IUP and the many students who have attended IUP has continued since his days as a student on campus.

Dr. Frank earned a master’s degree from Westminster College in 1959 and received his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1973.  He lives in Indiana with his wife, Jeannette.  They have two children. Janelle, a 1992 alumna, lives in Houston with her husband, Juan, and daughters, Sophia and Elise.  Jeffrey, a 1996 alumnus and the 2003 recipient of the Alumni Ambassador Award for the College of Fine Arts, lives in the Detroit area with his wife, Courtney, and daughter Effie.

Dr. Frank returned to campus in 1966 as assistant dean of men and veterans counselor. For twenty-five years, he remained the veterans counselor, helping young men and women to make the transition from military service to school. He was advisor of the Vets Club, which gave returning veterans a place to meet others with similar backgrounds. As assistant dean of men, he supervised sixteen social fraternities and was responsible for all off-campus housing.  He was director of the IUP Counseling Center.  He served as a career counselor.  He was elected president of the State System universities’ counselors association and later as president of the System’s career counselors association. Dr. Frank was an elected member of the IUP Alumni Association Executive Committee, the IUP Co-op Board of Directors, and the board of the Foundation for IUP.

A professor emeritus at IUP, he is still involved on campus.  He calls prospective students on behalf of the university and tutors IUP athletes.  He is assisting in fundraising efforts to support the Regional Development Center and Sports Complex.  He serves as treasurer of APSCUF, an organization of retired faculty members and is also a member of the Indiana County Alumni Chapter Committee.

His involvement also encompasses community activities.  He is a member of the Newman Center and the Vocations Club and a life member and past commander of the local VFW.  He worked to make the Indiana War Memorial Wall a reality and has been a member of the Indiana Democratic Committee and of the Indiana County Community Action Program Board. Upon his retirement from IUP, Dr. Frank became a volunteer helper of Congressman Jack Murtha.  In 1998, he became a part-time field representative for Mr. Murtha in Indiana, Armstrong, and Westmoreland counties.

Dr. Frank’s deep love for IUP and his native Indiana is without question.  Few, if any, can cite a similar half-century of such unselfish giving of time and talent.  It is in recognition and with deep appreciation for that record of support and dedication that he is honored with the 2006 IUP Distinguished Alumni Award for Service.
