As you plan your academic future, we personally invite you to surf our web pages and see for yourself what IUP has to offer. ...  You will find that IUP offers a wide variety of academic majors, including pre-professional programs.

Thank you for visiting, and good luck with your academic pursuits!

Warm regards,

Transfer Admissions Staff

What Makes a Student a Transfer Student?

Any student who has attempted at least 12 credits of non-developmental, non-technical academic coursework at a post-secondary institution accredited by one of the six regional accrediting agencies must apply as a transfer student.  Students cannot be considered a first-time student once coursework has been attempted.  This rule does not include college coursework taken to satisfy requirements for high school graduation.

When Should I Apply?

You should apply at least one semester before you plan to enroll at IUP.  It is always best to apply early to ensure admission, especially to those programs limited in size (such as nursing).  In addition, applying earlier provides more time for the review of credits and understanding how they fit into your major, as well as determining if IUP is the best choice for you.

Admission for Transfers

The first thing you need to do is apply.  In addition to the application (which you can submit online here), we need:

  • your final high school transcript
  • transcripts from all colleges, universities, and/or other schools you have attended
  • $35 application fee

Your admission is based primarily on your academic performance from the previous institution(s) that you attended.  The student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale from all post-secondary institutions attended and have met the minimum requirements established by the academic department to which the student is applying.  In addition, our admissions decision considers other evidence of students’ performance and ability to be a successful college student at IUP.  If you have attended more than one school, we will calculate a combined cumulative GPA from all schools.  Students who apply before completing their first semester may have a decision made based on high school information (if possible) pending receipt of their final college transcript at the completion of the semester.

Majors in education and fine arts have additional admission requirements beyond the university minimum.

We encourage you to visit our campus!  We have programs and tours Monday through Friday and host Academic Expos on select Saturdays.  In addition to providing you with an overview of campus, Transfer Services personnel are available to assist you with any transfer-specific questions you have--just let us know when you make your reservation!  For more information and to schedule a visit, click here!

Understanding Your Credit Evaluation

Once you have been admitted, an official credit evaluation will be performed and sent to you (usually within two weeks).  The evaluation will list courses you have taken and IUP equivalents (if any).  This first phase of the credit transfer process shows you how many of your credits will appear on your IUP transcript.  Please remember that this is unofficial until we receive your final official transcript(s).

The second phase of understanding your credit transfer relates specifically to your chosen major.  You must use the IUP catalog to determine which courses fulfill the specific requirements with your major.  Your department has authority over the application of credits toward your degree and can help to clarify those courses that do not fit clearly within the constraints of the major once you matriculate.

You are able to work with the Online Credit Evaluation System any time to determine, unofficially, how your courses will transfer.  This system shows all courses that have been evaluated previously and their IUP equivalents; courses that are not in this system have not been evaluated and may still be transferable—your official evaluation will include all classes on your transcript.

Re-Evaluation of Transfer Credit:

If a student feels a course was evaluated incorrectly, a re-evaluation form can be submitted with a syllabus for the course in question.  The form and syllabi for each course submitted for review should be taken to the Office of Transfer Services, 118 Sutton Hall, for consideration.

You may pick up a form in 118 Sutton Hall or download it here.

Planning is the Key

If you consider transferring to IUP, but will attend your current institution for a semester or more before making the transition, you should plan your schedule so that the courses will transfer and satisfy your graduation requirements at IUP.  Again, using the Online Credit Evaluation System and the  IUP catalog will help you to select the best courses to take.  For students attending community colleges, we have listed courses that fulfill many of IUP's requirements for graduation to aid in your scheduling.  View our Community College guides here!

Planning will help you to earn your degree in a timely manner!

What Happens Next?  Registration

Once you are admitted, you are asked to make a $150 tuition deposit to hold your place in the class.  You will be invited to one of four New Transfer Student Advisement and Registration days that are held on selected dates during the summer.  This one-day program will introduce you to the registration process at IUP, provide an informal advisement session with college faculty and representatives, and allow you to register and leave with a schedule at the end of the day.  Because of course registration restrictions, students can only register on these selected days.

Students unable to attend a summer registration day will register during late registration, the day before classes begin each semester.

Help!!!

If during this process you need assistance, please feel free to contact the IUP Office of Admissions, home of Transfer Services!  We may be able to assist you through email or by phone, so do not hesitate to contact us at admissions-transfer@iup.edu or at 1-800-442-6830 or 724-357-2230.

Paying for IUP ...

IUP offers a great education at an affordable cost. In fact, we've been recognized as a great value for our high academic standards and competitive costs by Barron's Best Buys in Higher Education, Money Magazine, U.S. News and World Report, and the Princeton's Review's Best 345 Colleges. What's more, we offer generous scholarship and loan packages: more than four out of five undergraduate students at IUP receive some form of financial aid.  Visit our Financial Aid Office's pages for more information.

Education

Students wishing to major in education must have passed the Praxis I.  Also, students with 33 credits or less must have a 2.75 GPA while students with more than 34 or more credits must have a 3.0GPA.

Fine Arts

Once students have been admitted to the university, fine arts majors have additional requirements for departmental admission:

Art:  Students who are interested in pursuing any of the art majors at IUP are invited to a Fine Arts Exploration Day after being admitted to the university to learn more about the College of Fine Arts and to submit a portfolio of their work for review by the department.

Music:  After admission to the university is granted, students who are interested in majoring in music must attend a Fine Arts Exploration Day, where they will learn more about the College of Fine Arts and have their audition for the program.  See the Music Department site for audition information.

Theater:  Those students who wish to study theater at IUP must attend a Fine Arts Exploration Day to either audition (if the student wants to focus on performance) or interview (if the student plans on concentrating on production).  Admitted students are invited to these programs.   Information about this process can be found on the Theater Department site.

Correspondence regarding this site should be sent to its maintainer, Lisa Marie Baker, lmarie@iup.edu. Please see IUP's statement regarding pages that do not officially represent the university.
