African Dance Ensemble
Established during the Spring 1995, the African Dance Ensemble is an organization interested in providing students with the opportunity to experience, promote, and share African oriented dance, music, creativity and culture through various performances each academic year. Without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, disability, religion, gender, sexual or affectional orientation, membership is open to all IUP students who are interested in experiencing the African culture.
Black Emphasis Committee
The Black Emphasis Committee (BEC) is a programming body composed of students who are interested in enriching the cultural awareness of African American Students and in promoting intercultural awareness among all students. BEC works closely with the African American Cultural Center to provide the IUP community with films, concerts, dances, and the HUB, and other social and recreational events that further these goals. Membership is open to all university students in good academic standing.
Black Student League
The Black Student League is the legislative body for minority students on campus. Service offered include general meetings, program co-sponsorships, and get acquainted events to familiarize new minority student with upperclassmen. To this end, the organization’s aim is to help students experience a more comfortable transition to college life and act as a unifying body for African American students in particular. Participation is open to all students year round who sympathize with the objective of the organization and seek to strengthen their cultural, intellectual, and aesthetic views.
IUP National Pan Hellenic Council (NPHC)
The IUP Council of NPHC is a governance organization, which seeks to develop and maintain social Greek like and inter-Greek relations, especially among the historically black fraternities and sororities. The council is a liaison body which represents the interest of black students in the decision making process at IUP’s council is currently comprised of seven of the eight historically Black Greek organizations of the National Pan Hellenic Council, and one newly found black Greek sorority.
National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH)
The mission of NSMH is “to promote hospitality education and the professional advancement of minorities.” Our objectives are to aid in the recruitment and retention of minority students in hospitality education, to build and maintain a working relationship between hospitality professionals the hospitality industry. Memberships is open to all IUP students without regard to race, color, creed, national origin disability, religion, gender, and sexual or affection orientation
IUP Voice of Joy
The IUP Voices of JOY Gospel Choir performs gospel music and looks to foster musical expression within its membership. Activities include practices, which are held once a week, bake sales, skating and bowling parties and performances on campus and throughout Pennsylvania. Membership is open to all IUP students, without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, disability, religion, gender, and sexual or affectional orientation.
NAACP, IUP Chapter
The NAACP is a multicultural advocacy group, which seeks to address discrimination within the community and jurisdiction of the university. If pursues all necessary to secure the elimination of discriminatory activities. NAACP activities and services include voter registration drives anti-racism workshops, fun raisers, and general meeting. Membership is open to all IUP students without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, disability religion, gender, and sexual or affection orientation.
Pan African Student Association
The Pan African Student Association is an organization open to individuals irrespective of national origin who are willing to explore and learn about the culture and diversity amongst people of Africa. Membership is open to the entire IUP community.
The College of Education Mentor Support Network
The College of Education Mentor Support Network pairs incoming freshmen with minority graduate students, seniors, and juniors within the various majors of the College of Education. The mentors provide the new students with a successful role model who will guide them through their first year and beyond, help them adjust to the university and the wider community, and be a supportive ally to whom they turn when needed. The Mentor Support Network is dedicated to enhancing the retention and recruitment of minority students for careers in teaching and related fields.
Latino Student Organization (LaSo)
The Latino Student Organization (LaSo) aims to provide programming on IUP’s campus that will create awareness about Latino culture, people, history and current issues. The group is not strictly for those of Latino heritage. Anyone interested in learning more about Latinos and helping to promote educational and recreational programs about and with Latinos is welcome to join the organization.
